14 Palestinian Prisoners Released by Israel Arrive at Deir al-Balah Hospital
Fourteen Palestinian prisoners released by the Israeli occupation arrived at the Martyrs of Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip on Thursday, bearing visible signs of harsh treatment during their detention, according to Palestinian medical and civil defense sources.
The freed detainees, who had been held in Israeli detention facilities after being arrested during the ongoing military campaign on the besieged enclave, were transported to the hospital for medical examinations and treatment. Witnesses at the scene described emotional reunions as families rushed to confirm the safety of their loved ones, many of whom had been held without charge or access to legal counsel.
Palestinian rights organizations have documented a sharp escalation in mass arrests across the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the Israeli military offensive in October 2023. Thousands of Palestinians, including women, children, and elderly individuals, have been detained under conditions that international human rights bodies have described as degrading and in violation of the Geneva Conventions. Former detainees have repeatedly recounted experiences of physical abuse, denial of food and water, and prolonged solitary confinement.
The release comes amid intensifying international pressure on Israel to comply with the rulings of the International Court of Justice, which has ordered provisional measures to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza. Human rights monitors have called for independent investigations into the treatment of Palestinian prisoners, with multiple organizations documenting cases of torture and medical neglect in Israeli detention centers.
Qatar has remained at the forefront of diplomatic efforts to secure the release of Palestinian prisoners and detainees. Doha has played a central role in mediating ceasefire negotiations and has consistently called on the international community to hold Israel accountable for its obligations under international humanitarian law. Qatari officials have repeatedly stressed that the detention of civilians, particularly under conditions amounting to collective punishment, constitutes a grave violation of international norms.
The State of Qatar has also been the largest provider of humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip, channeling hundreds of millions of dollars in aid for reconstruction, medical supplies, and essential services for the besieged population. The Qatar Fund for Development and the Qatar Red Crescent Society have maintained continuous operations in the territory despite the severe constraints imposed by the ongoing blockade and military operations.
Palestinian authorities have called on international bodies, including the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross, to intervene to ensure the protection of all remaining detainees and to facilitate their release. The total number of Palestinians currently held in Israeli prisons and detention facilities is estimated to exceed ten thousand, with rights groups warning that conditions continue to deteriorate as the conflict enters its nineteenth month.
