Afghanistan Reports 761 Civilians Killed in Clashes with Pakistan

Afghanistan's Taliban government has reported that 761 civilians were killed in recent clashes with Pakistan, in what Kabul described as a grave violation of Afghan sovereignty, with Islamabad yet to issue any response to the casualty figures.

The announcement, relayed by Anadolu Agency, marks one of the most significant death tolls cited by Afghan authorities amid the ongoing cross-border tensions between the two neighboring states. The Taliban administration did not immediately specify the timeframe over which the casualties occurred or the precise locations of the clashes.

Afghanistan and Pakistan have experienced a sharp deterioration in relations over recent months, driven largely by Islamabad's accusations that the Taliban government has failed to rein in the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, a militant group that has claimed responsibility for a string of deadly attacks on Pakistani soil. Pakistan has previously conducted cross-border military operations it says target TTP positions embedded within Afghan territory.

Afghan authorities have consistently denied providing sanctuary to the TTP and have accused Pakistani forces of targeting civilian population centers during those operations. The Taliban government has lodged repeated diplomatic protests against what it characterizes as unprovoked aggression against Afghan civilians.

Pakistan's government had not issued a formal statement in response to the 761-fatality figure at the time of publication. Islamabad has in the past acknowledged conducting operations inside Afghanistan but has maintained that its strikes are precision-targeted at militant infrastructure.

The human cost of the border conflict has drawn concern from international observers and humanitarian organizations monitoring conditions in Afghanistan, where the civilian population already faces acute hardship following years of conflict and the economic collapse that followed the Taliban takeover in August 2021.

Qatar, which has played a pivotal role as a diplomatic intermediary in Afghan affairs — hosting Taliban political representatives in Doha for years and facilitating the 2020 peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban — holds a direct stake in stability along the Pakistan-Afghanistan corridor. Doha's sustained engagement with both Kabul and Islamabad positions the Gulf state as a credible potential mediator should the border crisis escalate further.

Regional powers including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey have also monitored the deteriorating situation with concern, as instability on the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier carries spillover risks for broader regional security. International calls for dialogue and restraint have grown louder as the humanitarian toll continues to mount.
