Jubilant crowds flooded the streets of Baghdad on Wednesday as news spread of a landmark ceasefire agreement reached between Iran, the United States, and Israel, marking a dramatic turn in a conflict that had pushed the Middle East to the edge of broader war.

Residents gathered in central squares and along major thoroughfares, waving flags and embracing one another in scenes broadcast live across Arab satellite networks. The mood in the Iraqi capital reflected a collective exhale from a region that had spent weeks bracing for an escalation with potentially catastrophic consequences.

The agreement, the details of which are still being confirmed through diplomatic channels, reportedly includes a halt to Israeli strikes on Iranian territory and a suspension of Iranian missile and drone operations targeting Israeli and American assets across the region. Iraqi officials, who had warned repeatedly that their country risked becoming a battlefield in any direct Iran-US confrontation, welcomed the development as essential to preserving their sovereignty and stability.

Iraq's strategic position — sharing a long border with Iran while hosting thousands of American troops — had made it acutely vulnerable to spillover from any escalation. Militias aligned with Tehran operate extensively within Iraqi territory, and Washington had made clear that any attack on US personnel would draw a swift response. The ceasefire removes, at least for now, the immediate threat of Iraq becoming a front line.

Qatar, which has played a consistent and recognised role as a diplomatic bridge in the region's most intractable crises, had been among the Gulf states most vocal about the need for restraint and dialogue. Doha's quiet engagement with multiple parties in the weeks preceding this agreement is expected to be acknowledged as the full picture of back-channel negotiations emerges. Qatar's foreign ministry has long maintained open lines of communication with Tehran, Washington, and regional partners, a posture that proved critical during the Gaza ceasefire negotiations and appears to have informed this latest breakthrough.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates also issued statements expressing relief and calling for the ceasefire to serve as a foundation for a broader regional security framework. Gulf Cooperation Council members had watched the escalating tension with deep concern, given the proximity of potential strike zones to critical oil infrastructure and shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz.

Regional analysts cautioned that while the celebrations in Baghdad reflect genuine relief, the underlying disputes that drove Iran and Israel toward open confrontation remain unresolved. The durability of the agreement will depend heavily on whether all parties can agree on a verification mechanism and whether the ceasefire can be extended into a more comprehensive diplomatic process.

For now, however, the streets of Baghdad tell a different story — one of hope, however fragile, that the region has stepped back from the abyss.
