Chinese President Xi Meets Taiwan Opposition Leader Cheng Li-wun in Beijing

Chinese President Xi Jinping received Taiwan opposition leader Cheng Li-wun in Beijing on Thursday in the highest-level meeting between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait in more than a decade, a diplomatic development that could reshape cross-strait relations at a time of heightened regional tension.
The meeting, held at the Great Hall of the People, saw Cheng pledge to pursue reconciliation and unity across the Taiwan Strait, striking a markedly different tone from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, which has long resisted closer political ties with the mainland. It was the first face-to-face encounter between a senior Taiwanese political figure and the Chinese president since the historic 2015 meeting between Xi and then-Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou in Singapore.
Cheng, who leads one of Taiwan's main opposition parties, arrived in Beijing earlier this week as part of what his office described as a goodwill visit aimed at reducing tensions and exploring avenues for dialogue. During the meeting, he reportedly told Xi that the people on both sides of the strait share a common heritage and that political differences should be resolved through peaceful engagement rather than confrontation.
Xi, for his part, reiterated Beijing's longstanding position that Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory, while welcoming what he called a positive signal from forces within Taiwan that favor peaceful development of cross-strait relations. Chinese state media quoted Xi as saying that compatriots on both sides of the strait are members of one family and that no force can separate them.
The meeting comes against the backdrop of intensified military posturing in the Taiwan Strait over the past two years, with Beijing conducting large-scale naval and air exercises near the island in response to what it views as provocative moves toward formal independence. Washington, which maintains unofficial ties with Taipei and has increased arms sales to the island, has closely monitored the situation.
For Gulf states, including Qatar, stability in the Asia-Pacific carries direct economic implications. China is the largest buyer of Qatari liquefied natural gas, and any disruption in the Taiwan Strait, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, would threaten global energy supply chains. Doha has consistently advocated for the peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue, a principle it has applied to conflicts from the Gulf to the Horn of Africa.
Analysts cautioned that while the meeting represents a significant symbolic gesture, it is unlikely to produce immediate policy shifts in Taipei, where the ruling party retains executive power and has shown no inclination to alter its stance on sovereignty. Nevertheless, the encounter signals that back-channel communication between Beijing and segments of Taiwan's political establishment remains active.
Regional observers noted that the visit could also serve Beijing's broader diplomatic strategy of demonstrating that it remains open to peaceful engagement even as it strengthens its military capabilities, a message directed as much at Washington and its Indo-Pacific allies as at Taipei itself.
