Drone Strike Kills 70 at Sudan Hospital on Eid Night in "Double-Tap" Attack

A devastating drone strike on Al-Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur, Sudan, during the night of Eid al-Fitr has resulted in the deaths of at least 70 individuals, including 13 children, 7 women, 2 nurses, and 1 doctor, while wounding more than 89 others in what has been described as a "double-tap" attack.
The attack, which occurred on March 20, 2026, involved three drone-fired rockets targeting the hospital, a critical medical facility that served over 2 million people. The strike has rendered the hospital non-operational, with its pediatric, maternity, and emergency departments completely destroyed. This incident underscores the ongoing violence in Sudan, particularly in the context of the civil conflict that has escalated since April 2023, leading to widespread casualties and significant damage to healthcare infrastructure.
The Sudan Emergency Lawyers, a local human rights organization, attributed the strike to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). However, the SAF has denied responsibility, instead blaming the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has also denied involvement. The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed the occurrence of the attack but has refrained from assigning blame to any party involved. This incident is part of a broader pattern of violence in the region, with more than 500 civilians reported killed in drone strikes since January 2026, predominantly in the Kordofan region.
The WHO has documented over 2,000 deaths resulting from 213 attacks on healthcare facilities since the onset of the war in April 2023. The United Nations has indicated that the systematic targeting of medical facilities and personnel may constitute war crimes, raising serious concerns about the humanitarian situation in Sudan. The ongoing conflict has not only devastated communities but has also severely compromised access to essential health services for millions of people.
The implications of this attack extend beyond immediate casualties, as the destruction of healthcare facilities exacerbates the already dire humanitarian crisis in Sudan. With the loss of a major hospital, the ability to provide critical medical care to those in need is severely hindered, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children and pregnant women. The international community is increasingly alarmed by the frequency and brutality of attacks on healthcare, which undermine efforts to deliver humanitarian assistance and protect civilian lives.
From a Gulf perspective, the situation in Sudan raises significant concerns regarding regional stability and security. The Gulf states, which have historically engaged with Sudan through various diplomatic and economic channels, may need to reassess their involvement and support for peace initiatives in light of the escalating violence. The humanitarian crisis resulting from such attacks poses a challenge not only for Sudan but also for neighboring countries that may face the repercussions of mass displacement and regional instability. As the conflict continues, the urgent need for a comprehensive resolution and accountability for violations of international law becomes increasingly critical.
