Fire Erupts After Airstrike Targets Northern Lebanon Refugee Camp
A massive fire broke out in the Burj Al-Shamali refugee camp in southern Lebanon on Wednesday after an airstrike struck the densely populated area, sending plumes of thick black smoke into the sky and forcing residents to flee in panic, according to Palestinian and Lebanese media reports.
The strike targeted the camp, located on the outskirts of the coastal city of Tyre, which is home to tens of thousands of Palestinian refugees who have lived there for decades. Rescue teams and civil defense units rushed to the scene to battle the blaze and search for casualties, though the full extent of the damage and the number of victims remained unclear in the immediate aftermath of the attack.
Footage circulating on social media showed flames engulfing several structures within the camp as residents attempted to extinguish fires with whatever means available. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as families scrambled to evacuate, many carrying children and elderly relatives through narrow alleyways choked with smoke and debris.
Burj Al-Shamali is one of twelve official Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, established in 1948 to shelter Palestinians displaced during the Nakba. The camp, which spans barely one square kilometer, houses an estimated 22,000 registered refugees living in severely overcrowded conditions, making any military strike on the area particularly devastating.
The attack comes amid a broader escalation of hostilities in the region, with southern Lebanon experiencing intensified military operations that have displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians. International humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned that strikes on refugee camps constitute potential violations of international humanitarian law, given the concentrated civilian population and the protected status of refugee settlements under the Geneva Conventions.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, known as UNRWA, which operates schools, clinics, and other essential services in Burj Al-Shamali, has not yet issued a formal statement on the strike. The agency has faced mounting challenges in delivering aid across Lebanon as the security situation continues to deteriorate.
Qatar, which has been at the forefront of humanitarian efforts in the region, has consistently called for the protection of civilian infrastructure and refugee populations in conflict zones. Doha has provided hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to displaced populations across the Middle East and has used its diplomatic channels to push for de-escalation and adherence to international law.
The Lebanese government has yet to release an official casualty count from the strike. Emergency services warned that the fire could spread to adjacent neighborhoods given the tightly packed nature of the camp's infrastructure, where concrete buildings stand just meters apart with limited access routes for firefighting equipment.
