Oil Tops $100 as US Moves to Encircle Strait of Hormuz 2026
Global oil prices surged past the $100-per-barrel threshold on Tuesday after the United States announced plans to establish a naval cordon around the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway through which roughly a fifth of the world's oil supply passes daily, sending energy markets into their sharpest single-session rally in over two years.
Brent crude climbed to $102.40 a barrel in early trading, while West Texas Intermediate reached $99.80, as traders scrambled to price in the risk of a prolonged disruption to one of the most strategically vital shipping lanes on earth. The Strait of Hormuz, flanked by Iran to the north and Oman to the south, serves as the sole maritime exit for oil exports from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Iraq, and Qatar.
The Pentagon confirmed that additional naval assets, including carrier strike groups and mine-countermeasure vessels, had been repositioned to the Persian Gulf region as part of what officials described as a deterrence operation. A senior US defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the deployment was intended to guarantee freedom of navigation but declined to specify the operational timeline or the precise rules of engagement.
The announcement drew immediate condemnation from Tehran, where Iran's Armed Forces Chief of Staff vowed that any attempt to restrict Iranian access to international waters would be met with a decisive response. Iran has previously threatened to close the strait in response to Western sanctions, a scenario long described by energy analysts as a worst-case event for global supply chains.
For Qatar, the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas, the escalation carries direct economic and strategic implications. Doha's LNG tankers transit the Strait of Hormuz on every outbound voyage, making unimpeded access to the waterway a cornerstone of the country's export model and a fundamental element of its energy security guarantees to European and Asian buyers.
Qatari officials had not issued a formal public statement by the time of publication, though diplomatic sources familiar with the situation said Doha was engaged in urgent consultations with partners in the Gulf Cooperation Council as well as with international stakeholders. Qatar has historically advocated for de-escalation in the Gulf and has served as a mediating channel between Western governments and regional actors in previous crises.
Energy analysts warned that if the naval presence hardens into an effective blockade, the market impact could be far more severe. Goldman Sachs revised its 90-day Brent forecast upward to $115 a barrel in a note circulated to clients Monday evening, citing the possibility of a sustained supply shock. The International Energy Agency said it was monitoring the situation closely and that member states held strategic reserves equivalent to roughly 90 days of net import cover.
OPEC+ has an emergency ministerial consultative mechanism that could be convened to assess collective output responses, though sources within the group said no formal meeting had been called as of Tuesday morning. Saudi Arabia and the UAE, both heavily exposed to safe passage through the strait, are expected to play a central role in any multilateral diplomatic effort to defuse the standoff before it escalates further.
