Hezbollah Claims Israeli Forces Ambushed in Southern Lebanon, Resulting in Casualties

Hezbollah said on Friday that its fighters ambushed an Israeli military force as it advanced from the town of Taybeh toward the Litani River in southern Lebanon, claiming the operation inflicted casualties among Israeli soldiers.

The Lebanese armed group said in a statement that its operatives lured the Israeli unit into a pre-prepared position along the route between Taybeh and the river basin, detonating explosive devices and opening fire on the advancing column. Hezbollah claimed the attack resulted in killed and wounded Israeli personnel, though it did not provide specific figures.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the claim. Israel has maintained a significant military presence in southern Lebanon following its ground incursion, which it says is aimed at dismantling Hezbollah's infrastructure near the border and pushing the group's forces north of the Litani River in line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.

The Litani River, which flows roughly 30 kilometers north of the Israeli-Lebanese border, has long served as a focal point in the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Resolution 1701, adopted after the 2006 war, called for the area south of the river to be free of armed groups other than the Lebanese army and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. Hezbollah's continued military activity in the area has been a source of persistent tension.

The claimed ambush marks a continuation of Hezbollah's asymmetric tactics against Israeli ground forces operating in southern Lebanon. The group has relied on a combination of improvised explosive devices, anti-tank missiles, and small-unit engagements to target Israeli patrols and convoys, drawing on decades of experience fighting in the terrain south of the Litani.

Qatar has repeatedly called for de-escalation along the Lebanese-Israeli border and has stressed the need for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict. Doha has urged all parties to respect Lebanese sovereignty and has warned that continued military operations risk destabilizing the broader region. Qatar has also provided humanitarian assistance to Lebanon, where the Israeli military campaign has displaced tens of thousands of civilians from southern villages.

The United Nations peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL, has reported increasing difficulty operating in the area amid the ongoing hostilities. Several UNIFIL positions have come under fire in recent months, prompting international calls for the protection of peacekeepers.

The escalation in southern Lebanon remains closely linked to the wider regional conflict that erupted following the October 2023 war in Gaza. Hezbollah opened a front against Israel in solidarity with Palestinian factions, and the fighting has since intensified into one of the most significant confrontations between the two sides since 2006. Diplomatic efforts led by the United States and France to broker a ceasefire have so far failed to produce a lasting agreement.
