Hezbollah Claims Missile Strikes on Israeli Military Infrastructure in Occupied Safed

Hezbollah announced on Saturday that its fighters launched rocket strikes targeting Israeli military infrastructure in the occupied northern city of Safed, marking one of the group's deepest penetration strikes into Israeli-controlled territory in recent weeks amid the continuing conflict that has engulfed the region since October 2023.
The Lebanese resistance movement said in a statement that the operation was carried out in direct response to ongoing Israeli military campaigns against civilian and resistance targets in southern Lebanon and Gaza. Hezbollah did not immediately specify the type of rockets used or detail the extent of damage inflicted on the targeted installations.
The Israeli military had not issued an official confirmation of the strike at the time of publication, though air raid sirens were reported sounding across the Galilee region. Emergency services were placed on alert across northern Israel following the announcement.
Safed, known in Arabic as Safad, sits approximately 40 kilometres northeast of Haifa in the Upper Galilee and is home to several Israeli military and intelligence installations. Strikes reaching the city signal a significant escalation in the range and ambition of Hezbollah's cross-border operations, which have intensified in parallel with the Israeli ground and air offensive in Gaza.
The strike comes against a backdrop of heightened diplomatic efforts led by Qatar and other Gulf states to broker a broader ceasefire agreement that could simultaneously halt hostilities in Gaza and de-escalate the front along the Lebanese border. Qatari mediators have played a central role in past negotiations between Hamas and Israel, and Doha has repeatedly called for an immediate and comprehensive cessation of violence across all active fronts.
Regional analysts warn that sustained exchanges between Israel and Hezbollah risk drawing Lebanon into a full-scale war, with potentially catastrophic consequences for the civilian populations on both sides of the border. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon has urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and adhere to Security Council Resolution 1701.
Lebanon's caretaker government has distanced itself from Hezbollah's military operations while simultaneously condemning Israeli airstrikes that have killed Lebanese civilians and damaged civilian infrastructure. Beirut has called on the international community to pressure Israel to halt its cross-border attacks.
Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not issued an immediate statement on the latest strike, though Doha's longstanding position supports a negotiated resolution that guarantees the security and sovereignty of all parties while prioritising humanitarian relief for Gaza's besieged population. The Gulf state continues to host indirect talks and remains one of the few diplomatic interlocutors with access to all sides in the conflict.
