Hezbollah Claims Rocket Attack on Israeli Army Near Bint Jbeil

Hezbollah announced Sunday that its fighters launched a rocket barrage targeting Israeli military concentrations near Shmaran Hill in the southern Lebanese city of Bint Jbeil, marking one of the latest flashpoints in the ongoing cross-border confrontation between the Lebanese resistance movement and Israeli forces.

The group said in a statement that its rockets struck gatherings of Israeli army personnel in the vicinity of the hill, a strategically significant elevation overlooking Bint Jbeil, a city that has historically been a focal point of conflict between Hezbollah and Israel. The statement did not provide casualty figures, and the Israeli military had not immediately confirmed the attack.

Bint Jbeil, located approximately five kilometers from the Israeli border, has long been considered a symbolic heartland of Hezbollah's southern Lebanon stronghold. The city saw some of the fiercest fighting during the 2006 Lebanon War, when Israeli ground forces suffered significant losses attempting to seize it from Hezbollah fighters.

The latest strike comes amid a broader pattern of exchanges along the Blue Line, the UN-demarcated boundary separating Lebanon and Israel. Despite a ceasefire agreement brokered in November 2024 with heavy mediation from the United States and France, violations have continued on both sides, with Hezbollah accusing Israeli forces of maintaining positions inside Lebanese territory and conducting airstrikes in contravention of the truce terms.

Qatar, which has played a sustained diplomatic role in seeking to de-escalate tensions across the region, has repeatedly called for full Israeli compliance with the ceasefire agreement and the complete withdrawal of its forces from occupied Lebanese soil. Doha has urged the international community to apply pressure on Israel to honor its commitments under the November accord, warning that continued violations risk reigniting a broader conflict.

The Gulf state's foreign ministry has previously condemned Israeli military operations in Lebanon as violations of the country's sovereignty and international humanitarian law, and has called for the protection of Lebanese civilians, many of whom have yet to return to their villages in the south following months of displacement.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, has documented repeated incidents along the line of contact in recent weeks, calling on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and adhere to the terms of the ceasefire. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that any escalation risks drawing the broader region into renewed conflict at a time of already acute instability.

Hezbollah's statement on Sunday underscores the fragility of the current ceasefire arrangement and the persistent danger of miscalculation along one of the Middle East's most volatile borders.
