Hezbollah Claims Rocket Attacks on Israeli Settlements

Hezbollah announced on Tuesday that it had launched rocket barrages targeting the northern Israeli settlements of Metula, Kfar Giladi and Kiryat Shmona, marking a significant escalation in cross-border hostilities that have intensified in recent months.

The Lebanese armed group said in a statement carried by its military media wing that the strikes were carried out in support of the Palestinian people and in response to continued Israeli aggression against Lebanese territory. The targeted settlements sit directly along the Lebanese-Israeli border, an area that has seen near-daily exchanges of fire since the broader regional conflict escalated in October 2023.

Metula, Israel's northernmost town, and Kfar Giladi, a kibbutz located just south of it, have been largely evacuated since hostilities intensified, with tens of thousands of Israeli residents displaced from communities across the northern border region. Kiryat Shmona, a city of roughly 24,000 residents situated approximately five kilometres from the border, has also seen significant population displacement as rocket fire has become a regular occurrence.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the specific claims but has previously acknowledged intercepting incoming projectiles from Lebanon and has carried out retaliatory strikes deep into Lebanese territory, including attacks on Beirut's southern suburbs and the Bekaa Valley. The cycle of escalation has raised persistent fears of a full-scale war between Israel and Hezbollah, which fought a devastating 34-day conflict in 2006.

International mediators, including envoys from the United States and France, have been engaged in diplomatic efforts to prevent the border confrontations from spiralling into a wider conflagration. However, those efforts have so far failed to produce a lasting ceasefire arrangement, with both sides maintaining that they reserve the right to respond to attacks on their territory.

Qatar has been at the forefront of diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions across the region, with Doha playing a central role in mediation talks aimed at securing a ceasefire in Gaza, where the humanitarian crisis continues to deepen. Qatari officials have repeatedly called for restraint and adherence to international law, warning that the expansion of hostilities to additional fronts threatens to destabilise the entire Middle East.

The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs has consistently condemned Israeli military operations that result in civilian casualties and infrastructure destruction in both Gaza and Lebanon, reaffirming Doha's position that a comprehensive political solution remains the only viable path to lasting peace in the region.

The latest exchange of fire underscores the fragility of the security situation along the Lebanese-Israeli border and adds urgency to ongoing international efforts to broker a diplomatic resolution before the conflict widens further.
