Hezbollah Engages Israeli Forces at Close Range in Southern Lebanon

Hezbollah announced on Wednesday that its fighters engaged Israeli forces at point-blank range on the road leading to the town of Qantara in southern Lebanon, claiming confirmed casualties among Israeli troops in what the group described as a direct combat encounter.

The Lebanese armed group said in a statement that the confrontation took place at "zero distance," indicating close-quarters combat between its operatives and Israeli soldiers operating in the border area. Hezbollah claimed its fighters achieved "confirmed hits" on enemy forces, though no specific casualty figures were disclosed.

The engagement marks the latest in a series of escalating military confrontations along the Lebanon-Israel border, where tensions have remained elevated since the broader regional conflict intensified. Southern Lebanon has seen near-daily exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and the Israeli military, with both sides reporting operations targeting the other's positions and personnel.

Qantara, a small town in southern Lebanon's border region, has been at the center of repeated military activity in recent months. Israeli forces have conducted ground operations in parts of southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah has maintained its stated commitment to resisting what it describes as Israeli incursions into Lebanese territory.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment on Hezbollah's claims. Israel has previously acknowledged combat encounters with Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon while typically disputing the group's casualty claims. The Israeli army has maintained a policy of confirming its own casualties through official military channels rather than responding to adversary statements.

Regional observers note that close-range engagements represent a significant tactical development, suggesting that opposing forces are operating in closer proximity than the longer-range rocket and artillery exchanges that have characterized much of the cross-border conflict. Such encounters carry heightened risks of escalation and casualties on both sides.

Qatar has consistently called for restraint and de-escalation across all fronts of the regional conflict. Doha has emphasized the need for diplomatic solutions and has offered its mediation services to help resolve tensions in the region. The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs has repeatedly stressed the importance of respecting Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The ongoing hostilities in southern Lebanon have displaced tens of thousands of civilians from border communities on both sides, creating a humanitarian crisis that international organizations have struggled to address amid the continuing violence.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, which maintains peacekeeping positions in the south, has called on all parties to cease hostilities and respect the terms of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah.
