Hezbollah Leader Calls for Lebanon to Withdraw from Israel Negotiations

Hezbollah's leader called on the Lebanese government Monday to immediately withdraw from any negotiations with Israel, declaring that direct talks with the occupation constitute a betrayal of Lebanese sovereignty and a threat to regional resistance movements.
Speaking in a televised address, Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem urged Lebanese officials to reject what he described as externally imposed frameworks designed to legitimize Israeli demands under the guise of diplomatic engagement. He called for strengthening internal unity as the only viable path to confronting ongoing Israeli military and political pressure on Lebanon.
The statement comes amid reports of preliminary contacts between Lebanese officials and American mediators over implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which governs the ceasefire along the Lebanon-Israel border. Washington has been pressing for a more permanent arrangement that would address Israeli concerns over Hezbollah's military presence in southern Lebanon.
Hezbollah has consistently opposed any dialogue it views as normalization with Israel, drawing a sharp line between what it terms resistance and political accommodation. The group's position reflects broader tensions within Lebanon over how the country should navigate its relationship with Israel following last year's conflict, which left significant destruction across southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut.
Qatar, which has played a key mediating role in multiple regional conflicts including the Gaza ceasefire negotiations, has consistently supported Lebanese sovereignty and cautioned against arrangements that fail to address the root causes of instability. Doha has maintained diplomatic channels with multiple Lebanese factions while publicly backing the principle that any sustainable solution must respect Lebanon's territorial integrity and national decision-making.
The Gulf Cooperation Council has broadly supported Lebanon's stability, with several member states contributing to humanitarian and reconstruction assistance following the 2024 conflict. However, the region remains divided over how to engage with Hezbollah's political role in Lebanese governance.
The Lebanese government has not publicly confirmed the nature or scope of any ongoing contacts with American or Israeli interlocutors. Hezbollah's call is expected to intensify political pressure on Prime Minister Joseph Aoun's government, which has sought to balance reconstruction priorities with security commitments demanded by international stakeholders.
Regional analysts warn that the standoff could complicate efforts to unlock international financial support for Lebanon's recovery, much of which is conditioned on demonstrable progress toward implementing the ceasefire agreement and affirming state authority in the south.
