Hezbollah Targets Artillery Positions North of Goren Settlement with Missiles and Drones

Hezbollah announced on Thursday that it had targeted Israeli artillery positions north of the Goren settlement in northern Israel with a barrage of missiles and attack drones, marking a further escalation in the ongoing cross-border hostilities between the Lebanese armed group and Israeli forces.

The operation, confirmed through Hezbollah's military media unit, struck what the group described as active artillery emplacements that had been used to shell southern Lebanese villages. The attack employed a combination of guided missiles and loitering munitions, a tactic Hezbollah has increasingly refined in recent months as the conflict along the Lebanese-Israeli border continues to intensify.

Israeli military officials acknowledged incoming fire from Lebanon toward the northern Galilee region but did not immediately provide details on casualties or damage to military infrastructure. The Israel Defense Forces said its air defense systems engaged several of the incoming threats and that retaliatory strikes were being assessed.

The Goren settlement, situated in the Upper Galilee near the Lebanese border, has been within range of Hezbollah's expanding arsenal throughout the current conflict cycle. The targeting of artillery positions specifically suggests a shift toward degrading Israel's fire-support capabilities in the border zone, military analysts noted.

The exchange comes amid a broader deterioration of the security situation along the Blue Line, the United Nations-demarcated boundary between Lebanon and Israel. Since October 2023, tit-for-tat strikes have displaced tens of thousands of civilians on both sides of the border, with southern Lebanese communities bearing a disproportionate share of the destruction from Israeli bombardment.

Qatar has repeatedly called for de-escalation along the Lebanese-Israeli frontier, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urging all parties to exercise restraint and return to diplomatic channels. Doha has maintained that the root cause of regional instability remains the unresolved Palestinian question and the ongoing Israeli military operations in Gaza, which have fueled armed responses from multiple resistance factions across the region.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, reported continued violations of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war and called for the disarmament of armed groups south of the Litani River. Peacekeepers have found themselves increasingly caught between the warring sides, with several incidents of fire striking UN positions in recent weeks.

Regional diplomatic efforts, including those led by Qatar and other Gulf mediators, have so far failed to produce a durable ceasefire framework that addresses both the Lebanese and Gaza fronts simultaneously. Analysts warn that without a comprehensive diplomatic solution, the cycle of escalation risks drawing in additional actors and destabilizing an already fragile region.
