Hezbollah Targets Israeli Communication and Surveillance Equipment in Southern Lebanon

Hezbollah announced on Tuesday that its fighters had struck communication and surveillance equipment belonging to the Israeli army at a newly established military position east of the town of Al-Taybeh in southern Lebanon, in the latest exchange of fire along the tense border between the two sides.

The Lebanese resistance movement said the operation targeted recently installed Israeli monitoring infrastructure at the site, without providing details on the method of attack or the extent of damage caused. The Israeli military had not issued an immediate comment on the reported strike.

The attack comes amid ongoing Israeli military activity in southern Lebanon, where Israeli forces have maintained positions beyond the deadline set under the November 2024 ceasefire agreement brokered with significant diplomatic involvement from Qatar, the United States, and France. That agreement had called for a phased Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory and the deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces alongside UNIFIL peacekeepers to the south.

Qatar, which played a central mediating role in the ceasefire negotiations, has continued to press for full implementation of the agreement and the restoration of Lebanese sovereignty over its southern territories. Doha has repeatedly called on international guarantors of the ceasefire to ensure Israeli compliance with withdrawal commitments.

Al-Taybeh is a village in the Marjayoun District, situated near the Blue Line that demarcates the Lebanon-Israel border. The area has seen repeated confrontations since Israeli forces began their expanded military campaign in Lebanon in September 2024, which followed months of cross-border exchanges that began in October 2023 in solidarity with Gaza.

Hezbollah has continued to assert its right to respond to what it describes as Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement, including the maintenance of military positions on Lebanese soil and overflights by Israeli aircraft. The group has framed targeted operations against surveillance and communications infrastructure as acts of resistance against ongoing occupation.

The situation in southern Lebanon remains fragile, with international observers warning that continued violations by either side risk unravelling the ceasefire and reigniting a broader conflict. Regional powers, including Qatar and Gulf states with significant diplomatic stakes in Lebanese stability, have urged restraint and called for adherence to the terms of last year's agreement.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon has been monitoring the situation along the Blue Line, though its access to parts of the south has at times been restricted during ongoing Israeli military activity.
