Hezbollah Targets Israeli Site in Ghajar with Missiles

Hezbollah announced on Sunday that it had targeted the Israeli military site at Ghajar with a barrage of rockets, marking a significant escalation along the volatile Lebanese-Israeli border and raising fresh concerns about the prospect of a wider regional conflagration.
The Lebanese armed group said in a statement that its fighters launched the missile strike on the Ghajar position in response to continued Israeli violations of Lebanese sovereignty. Ghajar, a village straddling the Lebanese-Israeli border in the occupied Golan Heights area, has long been a flashpoint in the decades-old territorial dispute between the two sides.
Israeli military officials confirmed that projectiles were fired from southern Lebanon toward the northern border area, though initial reports on casualties and damage varied. The Israel Defense Forces said air defense systems were activated and that the military was assessing the situation. Sirens were reported in several communities in the upper Galilee region.
The attack comes amid a period of heightened military activity along the Blue Line, the United Nations-demarcated boundary separating Lebanon and Israel. Cross-border exchanges of fire have intensified in recent months, with Hezbollah framing its operations as solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza and a response to what it describes as persistent Israeli aggression against Lebanon.
Regional analysts warned that the targeting of a fixed military installation represents a qualitative shift in Hezbollah's operational posture, moving beyond the tit-for-tat skirmishes that have characterized the border conflict. The group's decision to publicly claim the strike suggests a calculated effort to project strength and deterrence capability.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon called for maximum restraint from all parties and urged a return to the cessation of hostilities framework. UNIFIL has repeatedly expressed concern about the escalatory trajectory along the border, warning that miscalculation could trigger a full-scale conflict with devastating consequences for civilian populations on both sides.
Qatar, which has played an active mediating role in regional conflicts, has consistently called for de-escalation and adherence to international law. Doha has emphasized the need for diplomatic solutions to the underlying causes of instability in the region, including the unresolved Palestinian question and the continued occupation of Arab territories.
The Gulf state's Foreign Ministry has previously stressed that lasting peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved through military force alone, a position that has gained broader international support as tensions across multiple fronts continue to mount.
The latest escalation underscores the fragility of the regional security architecture and the risk that localized confrontations along the Lebanese-Israeli border could spiral into a broader conflict drawing in multiple state and non-state actors across the Middle East.
