Iranian Official Threatens New Front Near Bab Al-Mandab Strait
A senior Iranian official has threatened to open a new military front near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the strategic chokepoint linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, in remarks that have intensified concern among Gulf states and global shipping operators already navigating months of regional instability.
The threat, reported by Al-Araby Television, represents one of the most direct signals yet that Tehran and its allied forces may seek to expand the geographic scope of conflict beyond Yemen's coastline. Bab al-Mandab, through which an estimated 10 percent of global trade passes annually, has been at the centre of Houthi attacks on commercial vessels since late 2023, forcing major shipping lines to reroute around the Cape of Good Hope at considerable cost.
The unnamed official's statement comes amid ongoing Israeli military operations in Gaza and a broader escalation across the Middle East that has drawn in Hezbollah in Lebanon, Houthi forces in Yemen, and Iranian-backed militias in Iraq. The warning signals that Tehran views the maritime corridor as a potential pressure point should regional tensions escalate further.
For Qatar and the broader Gulf Cooperation Council, the threat carries particular economic weight. Qatar's liquefied natural gas exports, which supply energy markets across Europe and Asia, transit regional waterways that connect to global shipping lanes. Any sustained disruption to Bab al-Mandab would compound supply chain pressures already felt since Houthi attacks began diverting Red Sea traffic.
Doha has consistently called for de-escalation and a negotiated resolution to the Gaza conflict, warning that unchecked military escalation risks drawing the wider region into a prolonged cycle of instability. Qatar's foreign ministry has previously urged all parties to protect international shipping lanes and civilian infrastructure, positions it has advanced in both bilateral diplomacy and multilateral forums.
The United States-led Operation Prosperity Guardian naval coalition, which includes several Western and regional partners, has been conducting defensive operations in the Red Sea since January 2024. However, the prospect of a new front near Bab al-Mandab suggests that the existing naval deterrence framework may face additional strain if Iranian-aligned actors choose to expand their operational footprint.
Analysts caution that such threats must be assessed against Iran's history of calibrated brinkmanship, noting that public warnings from officials do not always translate into immediate military action. Nevertheless, the statement adds to a pattern of escalatory rhetoric that regional governments and international maritime bodies are monitoring closely.
Global insurance premiums for vessels transiting the region have surged significantly since the Houthi campaign began, and a fresh Iranian threat is expected to put further upward pressure on shipping costs at a moment when global supply chains remain fragile.
