Iranian Official Warns Allies May Close Bab al-Mandab if Situation Escalates

A senior Iranian official has warned that Tehran's regional allies stand ready to close the strategic Bab al-Mandab strait if the current military and diplomatic situation deteriorates further, a statement that underscores Iran's expanding leverage over critical global shipping lanes and its willingness to deploy that leverage as a deterrent.

The warning, reported by TRT Arabic, marks one of the most direct public declarations from an Iranian official linking the fate of the Red Sea chokepoint to the broader conflict landscape across the Middle East. Bab al-Mandab, the narrow waterway separating Yemen from Djibouti and Eritrea, serves as one of the world's most critical maritime passages, through which an estimated 10 percent of global trade transits each year, including significant volumes of liquefied natural gas from Qatar and other Gulf producers.

The statement comes amid sustained Houthi attacks on commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea, a campaign the Yemen-based group has tied to solidarity with Gaza. Iran, which provides political backing and material support to the Houthis, has increasingly framed these operations as part of a coordinated regional resistance axis that could be activated in escalating stages.

For Gulf states, including Qatar, the prospect of a closed or severely disrupted Bab al-Mandab carries direct economic consequences. Qatar's LNG exports bound for European and Asian markets pass through the strait before entering the Gulf of Aden and onward to global buyers. Any prolonged closure or sustained threat environment would force costly rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope, adding weeks and significant freight costs to each voyage.

The warning is also being read in diplomatic circles as a signal to Washington and its allies, who have been conducting military operations against Houthi positions in Yemen in an effort to restore freedom of navigation. Iran appears to be drawing a direct line between the intensity of those strikes and the potential expansion of disruption to other maritime corridors under the influence of its regional partners.

Qatar, which maintains diplomatic channels with both Iran and Western governments, has consistently called for de-escalation and a negotiated resolution to the Gaza conflict as the surest path to stabilizing the broader regional security environment. Doha has warned that the interconnected nature of Middle East flashpoints means that unresolved political crises carry escalatory risks that no single actor can fully contain.
