Iranian Officials Express Doubts About US Peace Talks Amid Military Buildup

Iranian officials have conveyed to several regional and international intermediaries that they harbor deep skepticism about the sincerity of Washington's diplomatic overtures, saying Tehran has been deceived by the Trump administration before and is unwilling to fall into the same trap again, according to sources familiar with the communications.

The messages, reportedly delivered to Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey in recent days, reflect a hardening posture in Tehran at a moment when the United States is simultaneously pursuing diplomatic channels and reinforcing its military presence across the Middle East. Iranian leaders told their counterparts that they had twice engaged in good-faith dialogue with President Donald Trump's team only to see Washington escalate pressure through sanctions and military threats, the sources said.

The diplomatic maneuvering comes against a backdrop of heightened American military activity in the Gulf region. The United States has bolstered its naval and air assets in the area in recent weeks, moves that Pentagon officials have characterized as defensive and precautionary but that Tehran views as preparations for a possible strike. Iranian military commanders have responded by placing their forces on elevated alert and conducting exercises near the Strait of Hormuz, the vital waterway through which roughly one-fifth of the world's oil passes daily.

For Qatar, which has long positioned itself as a neutral mediator between Washington and Tehran, the escalation presents both a diplomatic challenge and a strategic imperative. Doha has historically maintained open lines of communication with all parties in the region and played a critical role in facilitating earlier rounds of indirect talks between the United States and Iran. Qatari officials have repeatedly stressed that dialogue remains the only viable path to de-escalation and have cautioned against military adventurism that could destabilize the entire Gulf.

The stakes extend well beyond bilateral tensions. Any military confrontation between the United States and Iran would send shockwaves through global energy markets, threaten shipping lanes critical to international trade, and risk drawing in regional powers on multiple sides. Gulf Cooperation Council states, which host significant American military installations while maintaining varying degrees of economic and diplomatic ties with Iran, would find themselves in an extraordinarily precarious position.

Analysts say Iran's decision to communicate its grievances through third-party capitals rather than directly to Washington suggests Tehran is building a diplomatic record to justify its stance before the international community. By framing itself as the aggrieved party that sought peace but was repeatedly misled, Iran may be laying the groundwork for a more confrontational posture should talks collapse entirely.

The situation remains fluid, with no indication that either side is prepared to make the concessions necessary for a breakthrough. Regional capitals continue to urge restraint, but the convergence of military buildup and diplomatic distrust has pushed the confrontation closer to a dangerous threshold than at any point in recent months.
