Iranian Police Chief Reports Dismantling Enemy Network, Arresting 85 in 25 Provinces

Iranian police announced Monday they had dismantled what authorities described as an enemy-linked network operating across 25 of the country's 31 provinces, arresting 85 individuals in one of the largest domestic security sweeps in recent months.

Police Chief Ahmad Reza Radan confirmed the operation in a statement carried by state media, saying the network had been neutralized before it could carry out planned activities, though he did not specify the nature of those activities or identify which foreign adversary was allegedly behind the operation.

The announcement comes amid heightened regional tensions following weeks of escalating pressure on Tehran from Western capitals and continued hostilities on multiple fronts in the broader Middle East. Iran has repeatedly accused the United States and Israel of sponsoring destabilization efforts inside its borders, allegations both governments deny.

The scale of the operation — spanning nearly all of Iran's provincial territory simultaneously — points to what Iranian authorities characterized as a coordinated infrastructure rather than isolated cells. Security sweeps of this magnitude are relatively rare and typically signal that authorities believe a threat has crossed a threshold requiring a national-level response.

For Gulf states, the development carries immediate diplomatic weight. Qatar, which maintains open channels with Tehran and hosts the largest U.S. military base in the region at Al Udeid, has consistently advocated for dialogue over confrontation as the preferred mechanism for managing Iranian-Western tensions. Doha has previously served as a backchannel in negotiations between Washington and Tehran, and any sharp escalation in Iran's internal security situation risks narrowing the space for that diplomatic role.

The Gulf Cooperation Council has watched Iranian domestic stability closely, particularly as oil markets remain sensitive to any signs of instability in the wider Persian Gulf corridor. Iran remains a significant factor in regional energy calculations, and mass arrests tied to alleged foreign interference historically coincide with periods of external pressure on the Islamic Republic.

Iranian authorities offered few additional details on the identities of those arrested or the specific charges they face. Under Iranian law, those accused of acting on behalf of foreign adversaries can face charges of moharebeh — enmity against God — which carries severe penalties including capital punishment.

Observers are likely to watch whether Tehran uses the announcement to justify further diplomatic pressure on specific countries or to build a domestic narrative ahead of anticipated negotiations over its nuclear programme.
