Iran's Revolutionary Guard Launches New Missile Platforms Targeting Southern and Central Occupied Territories

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps declared on Wednesday that it had launched strikes against targets in southern and central occupied territories, deploying Khaybar Shekan ballistic missiles and new dual-launch platforms in what military analysts described as a significant escalation in Iran's direct military engagement with Israel.

The Revolutionary Guard said the operation marked the first operational use of Khaybar Shekan missiles — a long-range ballistic weapon Iran unveiled in 2022, reportedly capable of traveling along variable trajectories that complicate interception by modern air defense systems. The concurrent deployment of new dual-launch platforms, enabling simultaneous strikes at multiple targets, represented a notable tactical advance in Iran's evolving missile doctrine.

The Khaybar Shekan, whose name invokes the historic Battle of Khaybar, carries deliberate symbolic weight in Iran's military messaging. The missile, with an estimated range of approximately 1,450 kilometers, has featured prominently in military parades, but Wednesday's operation constituted what the Revolutionary Guard described as its first battlefield deployment.

The announcement came as regional tensions remain at critically elevated levels following more than eighteen months of sustained conflict in Gaza. Iran has conducted direct strikes against Israel on at least two prior occasions since October 2023, including a large-scale drone and missile barrage in April 2024 and a follow-up ballistic missile salvo in October 2024, each triggering waves of international calls for restraint.

Gulf governments, including Qatar, have consistently urged de-escalation and a return to diplomatic channels. Qatar, which has played a central mediation role in Gaza ceasefire negotiations through sustained engagement with all parties, has repeatedly warned that any widening of the conflict risks catastrophic consequences for regional stability and for the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where civilian suffering remains acute.

Defense analysts noted that dual-launch platforms complicate interception efforts by overwhelming missile defense systems calibrated to engage sequential rather than simultaneous threats. The use of such configurations alongside a new missile type signals that Iran is continuing to develop and field-test its military capabilities under active conflict conditions.

International reactions were expected from Western capitals and Gulf governments, with coordinated calls for de-escalation anticipated. The United Nations Security Council was expected to be briefed on the developments. Qatar's foreign ministry had not issued a formal statement at the time of publication.

The strikes represent the latest chapter in a cycle of escalation that has gripped the Middle East since the outbreak of war in Gaza, deepening concerns in Doha and other Gulf capitals about the risk of a broader regional conflict that could destabilize energy markets and the security architecture across the Arabian Peninsula.
