Israel Likely to Initiate Conflict with Airstrikes on Lebanon and Iran

Russian intelligence sources are warning that Israel may be preparing to launch broad aerial strikes against Lebanon and Iran, in what analysts say could mark a significant escalation of the ongoing regional conflict that has already reshaped the Middle East since October 2023.

According to reports circulating through Russian intelligence channels, Israeli military planners have drawn up operational scenarios targeting Iranian territory as well as Hezbollah infrastructure in Lebanon. The warnings come amid heightened tensions following months of cross-border exchanges between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, as well as continued Israeli-Iranian shadow warfare that has included drone and missile salvos.

The potential strikes would represent a dramatic widening of a conflict already stretching from Gaza to the Red Sea. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which have their own complex relationships with Iran despite years of rivalry, would also be exposed to potential Iranian retaliatory action targeting Gulf infrastructure, including oil facilities and shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz through which roughly 20 percent of global oil supply passes.

No official Israeli government statement has confirmed offensive planning against Iran or Lebanon beyond previously acknowledged operations. The Israeli military has maintained a policy of neither confirming nor denying specific operational intentions.

United States officials have privately urged Israel to avoid striking Iranian territory directly, fearing an uncontrollable escalation that could drag American forces stationed across the Gulf into a broader war.
