Israeli Airstrike in Sidon, Lebanon, Kills Displaced Residents from Shebaa

An Israeli airstrike struck the seafront corniche of the southern Lebanese city of Sidon on Tuesday night, killing multiple displaced civilians who had fled their homes in the town of Shebaa, according to sources on the ground and reports from Lebanese media.

The Lebanese Ministry of Health and local civil defence units were responding to the scene, with emergency teams working to recover casualties from the rubble. The strike drew immediate condemnation from Lebanese political figures and human rights observers, who described the targeting of a civilian displacement zone as a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law. The Lebanese government has repeatedly called on the international community to pressure Israel to halt its military campaign, which has killed hundreds of civilians and displaced an estimated one million people across southern Lebanon.

Qatar has been among the most vocal Gulf states demanding an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Doha issuing repeated statements condemning Israeli strikes on civilian infrastructure. Qatar's diplomatic efforts, which have run parallel to its mediation role in the Gaza ceasefire negotiations, have sought to prevent a wider regional escalation.

The Gulf Cooperation Council has collectively condemned Israeli military operations in Lebanon, calling on the United Nations Security Council to enforce existing resolutions and hold Israel accountable for civilian casualties. Arab League member states convened an emergency session last month to address the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding across both Gaza and Lebanon.

The attack on Sidon's corniche comes amid heightened international pressure on Israel following a series of strikes in recent weeks that killed civilians in areas previously designated as safe zones. Human rights organisations have documented a pattern of strikes on displacement sites, hospitals, and civilian infrastructure throughout Lebanon's south and Bekaa Valley.
