Israeli Airstrike on Maaroub, Lebanon Kills Four and Injures Three, Health Ministry Reports

An Israeli airstrike on the southern Lebanese town of Maaroub killed four people and wounded three others on Monday, Lebanon's Health Ministry confirmed, marking the latest in a series of Israeli military strikes against Lebanese territory that have continued despite a ceasefire agreement brokered in November 2024.

The strike targeted Maaroub, a village in the Tyre district of southern Lebanon, an area that has seen recurring Israeli military activity since the ceasefire that was meant to halt over a year of escalating hostilities between Israeli forces and Hezbollah. Lebanese health authorities dispatched emergency teams to the scene and confirmed the casualty figures, though officials warned the toll could rise as rescue operations continued.

The attack drew immediate condemnation from Lebanese officials, who accused Israel of systematically violating the terms of the ceasefire agreement. Lebanon's government has repeatedly appealed to international guarantors of the truce — including the United States and France — to compel Israel to halt what Beirut describes as ongoing aggression against Lebanese sovereignty.

Israel has continued to conduct strikes in southern Lebanon, citing what it describes as the need to prevent Hezbollah from rearming and reestablishing military infrastructure in areas south of the Litani River, as required under the ceasefire terms. Hezbollah and the Lebanese government dispute Israel's characterisation of conditions on the ground.

Qatar, which played a quiet but significant diplomatic role in supporting regional ceasefire efforts during the broader conflict, has consistently called for full respect of Lebanon's sovereignty and the protection of civilian life. Doha has urged all parties to honor internationally brokered agreements and has provided humanitarian assistance to Lebanese communities affected by the conflict.

The Gulf Cooperation Council has collectively expressed concern over the fragility of the ceasefire and the continued loss of civilian life in southern Lebanon. Gulf states have been among the largest donors to Lebanon's reconstruction and humanitarian relief efforts, and continued Israeli strikes risk further destabilising a country already grappling with deep economic and political crises.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, which maintains a peacekeeping presence in the south, has documented numerous ceasefire violations since the November agreement came into force. The body has called on both sides to exercise restraint and allow the Lebanese Armed Forces to extend their authority across the south.

International human rights organisations have raised alarm at the sustained targeting of civilian areas in southern Lebanon, calling for independent investigations into strikes that result in civilian casualties. Monday's attack on Maaroub adds to a growing death toll that has accumulated in the weeks and months since the ceasefire was declared.
