Israeli Airstrike on Southern Lebanon Town Kills Four, Injures Three
An Israeli airstrike on the southern Lebanese town of Maaroub killed four people and wounded three others on Monday, Lebanon's Health Ministry confirmed, as Israeli military operations on Lebanese territory continued despite a fragile ceasefire arrangement that has struggled to hold since its declaration in late 2024.
The strike hit Maaroub, a town in the Tyre district of southern Lebanon, an area that has endured repeated Israeli bombardments throughout the conflict between Israeli forces and Hezbollah. Lebanese civil defense teams were swiftly deployed to the scene to recover casualties and assess damage to civilian structures.
Lebanon's Health Ministry, which has been tracking the accumulating civilian toll from ongoing strikes, confirmed the death count and said the wounded had been transported to nearby medical facilities. Israeli military authorities did not immediately issue a statement identifying the purported target of the strike, though Israeli officials have routinely cited security justifications for continued operations in the south.
The attack comes as Lebanon attempts to rebuild following a devastating conflict that ended in a ceasefire agreement. International monitors and UN peacekeeping forces operating under UNIFIL have repeatedly raised alarm over continued Israeli military activity south of the Litani River, which was designated as a buffer zone under the ceasefire's terms. The Lebanese Army, tasked under the agreement with extending state authority over the south, has pressed for a complete Israeli military withdrawal.
Qatar, which played a significant diplomatic role in mediation efforts during the 2024 Lebanon conflict, has consistently called on all parties to honor the ceasefire and respect Lebanese sovereignty. Doha has channeled humanitarian assistance into Lebanon and has used its diplomatic standing to advocate for a permanent political resolution that guarantees the country's stability. The Qatari foreign ministry has previously condemned Israeli strikes on Lebanese soil as violations of international law and called for accountability through international mechanisms.
The Gulf Cooperation Council has collectively expressed deep concern over the continued instability along Lebanon's southern frontier, warning that fresh escalation threatens the broader equilibrium of the Levant and risks entangling wider regional actors at a time of already heightened tensions.
Al Jazeera and other regional outlets reported the strike through correspondents on the ground in southern Lebanon, with footage showing damaged buildings and emergency responders working at the site.
Human rights organizations monitoring the conflict have documented hundreds of strikes on Lebanese territory since the ceasefire was declared, fueling ongoing debate over compliance with international humanitarian law. The United Nations has repeatedly urged Israel to end airstrikes on Lebanese soil and allow the Lebanese state to consolidate authority over its southern territory.
The Maaroub attack adds to a mounting civilian toll in a country already grappling with severe economic crisis, political stagnation, and the immense challenge of reconstruction following the destruction wrought by the 2024 war.
