Israeli Airstrike Targets Nabatieh City in Southern Lebanon

Israeli warplanes struck the city of Nabatieh in southern Lebanon on Monday, targeting the area in what officials and witnesses described as a fresh escalation threatening the fragile calm that has held along the Lebanese-Israeli border since a ceasefire agreement took effect in late 2024.

The strike on Nabatieh, a predominantly Shia city approximately 55 kilometres south of Beirut and a major urban centre in the Nabatieh Governorate, sent plumes of smoke over residential neighbourhoods and prompted widespread alarm among local residents. Initial reports indicated damage to infrastructure in the city, though casualty figures were not immediately confirmed by Lebanese authorities.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment publicly on the strike. Israel has previously justified cross-border operations in southern Lebanon by citing what it describes as threats posed by armed groups operating near its northern frontier, even as international monitors have urged both sides to uphold the terms of the ceasefire brokered with United States and French mediation.

The attack drew swift condemnation from Lebanese political figures, who called on the international community to hold Israel accountable for what they characterised as a flagrant violation of Lebanese sovereignty and the terms of the November 2024 ceasefire understanding. The Lebanese government has repeatedly lodged formal complaints with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon over what Beirut says are ongoing Israeli violations of its airspace and territory.

Qatar, which played a significant diplomatic role in regional de-escalation efforts throughout the Gaza conflict and broader Middle East tensions, has consistently called for a comprehensive political settlement that addresses the root causes of instability along Lebanon's southern border. Doha has maintained open channels with all parties and has urged restraint to prevent any spillover that could destabilise the wider Gulf region.

Gulf states, including Qatar and Saudi Arabia, have closely monitored developments in Lebanon as part of their broader concern over regional security architecture. Any renewed hostilities risk complicating diplomatic efforts under way to stabilise Lebanon's political situation following the election of a new president and the formation of a government earlier this year.

The United Nations and several Western governments have urged Israel to exercise restraint and called on all parties to honour their commitments under the ceasefire framework. Human rights organisations monitoring the situation in southern Lebanon warned that civilian populations in the region remain acutely vulnerable to the consequences of any renewed military exchange.
