Israeli Airstrike Targets Northwest District of Lebanon's Khiyam Town

The strike hit a residential area in the northwestern district of Khiyam, a town in the Marjayoun district situated near Lebanon's southern border with Israel. Khiyam has long been a flashpoint in the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The town, which sits approximately five kilometers from the Israeli border, was the site of a notorious Israeli-run detention facility that operated during Israel's occupation of southern Lebanon until 2000. In recent months, Khiyam and surrounding areas of the south have been subjected to repeated Israeli bombardment, with residents caught between the slow implementation of a ceasefire and the continued reality of airstrikes.

The strike comes despite a ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States and France in November 2024, which was intended to halt more than a year of intense fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. Doha has provided substantial humanitarian and reconstruction assistance to Lebanon following the devastation wrought by the 2024 conflict, and senior Qatari officials have urged all parties to uphold international law and ensure the protection of civilian lives. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon has documented dozens of Israeli ceasefire violations since November 2024, raising alarm among international observers about the long-term durability of the agreement.
