Israeli Army Reports Missile Launches from Iran Targeting Jerusalem and Tel Aviv

The Israeli military reported on Tuesday that it had detected the launch of ballistic missiles from Iranian territory toward the cities of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, triggering air raid sirens across central and northern Israel as defense systems were activated in anticipation of incoming projectiles.
The Israeli Defense Forces confirmed the launches in a brief statement, urging civilians in targeted areas to move immediately to protected spaces and shelters. Israeli air defense batteries, including the Arrow missile defense system designed to intercept long-range ballistic threats, were said to be engaged as the military tracked the incoming munitions.
The development marks a significant escalation in the direct military confrontation between Israel and Iran, which has been building over recent months amid continued Israeli military operations in Gaza and Lebanon. Iran launched a large-scale ballistic missile and drone attack on Israeli territory in April 2024, and again in October 2024, both of which were largely intercepted with assistance from the United States and regional partners.
Qatari officials have consistently called for de-escalation across the region, with the foreign ministry in Doha repeatedly warning that expanding the conflict risks catastrophic humanitarian consequences for civilian populations throughout the Middle East. Qatar, which hosts the largest American military base in the region at Al Udeid Air Base, occupies a uniquely sensitive position as both a mediator in Gaza ceasefire negotiations and a key node in the regional security architecture.
Gulf states including the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have not yet issued official statements in response to the latest reported launches. Regional air traffic management authorities were expected to issue NOTAMs restricting airspace over parts of the eastern Mediterranean and Gulf corridor as a precautionary measure.
The United States, which has maintained a heightened military presence in the region, was monitoring the situation closely, according to officials. American carrier strike groups operating in the Mediterranean and the Gulf have previously participated in the interception of Iranian projectiles targeting Israel.
Markets in the Gulf region and internationally were expected to react sharply to the development, with Brent crude futures likely to surge given the direct targeting of Israeli population centers from Iranian soil. Any sustained exchange risked drawing in additional regional actors and complicating ongoing diplomatic efforts to reach a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, where Qatari and Egyptian mediators have been working intensively in recent weeks.
