Israeli Authorities Block Friday Prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque Again

Israeli authorities barred Muslim worshippers from performing Friday prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem on Friday, extending a pattern of access restrictions that has drawn repeated condemnation from Arab governments and international human rights bodies.

Security forces deployed in large numbers around the mosque compound, known to Muslims as Al-Haram Al-Sharif and to Jews as the Temple Mount, preventing worshippers from reaching the site and blocking prayers in surrounding streets. Israeli officials cited what they described as emergency security measures, though no specific incident was publicly identified to justify the closures.

The restrictions left hundreds of Palestinian worshippers unable to enter the third holiest site in Islam during the final weeks of Ramadan, a period when attendance at Al-Aqsa traditionally surges and the symbolic weight of any denial of access is felt acutely across the Muslim world.

Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has consistently condemned Israeli restrictions on Muslim worship at Al-Aqsa, framing such measures as violations of international law and deliberate provocations against Islamic heritage. Doha has repeatedly called on the international community to hold Israel accountable for its administration of occupied East Jerusalem under the terms of the Oslo-era status quo arrangements, which nominally grant Jordan's Waqf authority custodianship over the holy site.

The blockade comes amid heightened tensions in the occupied West Bank and a sustained international focus on conditions in Gaza, where Israel's military campaign has now entered its eighteenth month. Rights groups argue that restrictions at Al-Aqsa are part of a broader strategy to alter the demographic and religious character of occupied East Jerusalem in violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

Jordan, which holds the Hashemite custodianship of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, issued a formal protest through its foreign ministry, describing the closure as an unacceptable assault on Muslim rights and a destabilising act that threatens regional security. Amman has repeatedly warned Israel that any changes to the status quo at Al-Aqsa risk triggering wider unrest.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, headquartered in Jeddah, called on member states to mobilise diplomatic pressure against Israel and urged the United Nations Security Council to take binding measures to protect Palestinian access to religious sites in East Jerusalem.

Friday's incident is not isolated. Israeli authorities have imposed access restrictions at Al-Aqsa during multiple religious occasions in recent years, including previous Ramadan periods, citing security rationale that Palestinian and Arab officials consistently reject as pretextual. International observers note that such closures violate Israel's own commitments under the 1994 Washington Declaration and longstanding understandings with Jordan regarding the administration of Jerusalem's holy sites.
