Israeli Authority Reports Shells and Shrapnel in 7 Cities After Attack

Israeli emergency services reported Saturday that missile shells and shrapnel fell across 17 sites in seven central Israeli cities following a pre-dawn Iranian ballistic missile strike, marking one of the most significant direct exchanges between Tehran and Tel Aviv in months.
The Israeli National Emergency Authority confirmed the impact sites stretched across a broad corridor of central Israel, with authorities urging residents to remain in shelters as military and civil defense units assessed the extent of damage. Israeli air raid sirens had sounded across large parts of the country in the early morning hours, sending millions into bomb shelters before the all-clear was issued.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for the strike, framing it as a response to continued Israeli military operations in Gaza and what Tehran described as repeated Israeli violations of regional sovereignty. Iranian state media broadcast footage of what it said were ballistic missiles launched from Iranian territory, with officials warning that further escalation by Israel would bring a more severe response.
Israeli military officials said the Iron Dome and David's Sling air defense systems intercepted the majority of projectiles, though they acknowledged that debris and shrapnel from intercepted missiles had caused the reported impacts on the ground. No mass casualty figures were immediately released, though local media reported property damage in residential neighborhoods in cities including Tel Aviv, Rishon LeZion, and Rehovot.
The strike comes at a moment of acute regional tension, with diplomatic efforts to broker a Gaza ceasefire stalled and the risk of a broader regional conflict mounting. Qatar, which has played a central role as a mediator between Hamas and Israeli negotiators through Doha-based talks, has consistently warned that the failure to reach a permanent ceasefire in Gaza risks igniting a multi-front escalation across the region.
Qatari officials have repeatedly called for all parties to exercise maximum restraint and return to the negotiating table, with the Foreign Ministry reiterating that a political solution to the Palestinian cause remains the only durable path to regional stability. Gulf states watched the overnight developments closely, with several issuing statements urging de-escalation and expressing concern about the risk of the conflict spreading beyond Gaza's borders.
The United States and European governments called for calm, with Washington confirming it had been in contact with Israeli counterparts before and after the strike. The United Nations Secretary-General called for an immediate halt to exchanges of fire, warning that a direct Iran-Israel military confrontation carried catastrophic consequences for the entire Middle East.
