Israeli Fighter Jets Fly at Low Altitude Over Beirut and Lebanese Coast

Israeli fighter jets conducted low-altitude flights over Beirut and the Lebanese coastline on Tuesday, according to Al Jazeera's correspondent in Lebanon, in a provocative display of military force that has heightened fears of a renewed escalation along the volatile Lebanese-Israeli frontier.

The warplanes were observed flying at unusually low altitudes over the Lebanese capital and several coastal areas, generating powerful sonic booms that rattled windows and sent residents into a state of alarm. The flights, which occurred during daylight hours, represent a significant intensification of Israeli aerial activity over Lebanese sovereign territory.

Lebanon's caretaker government swiftly condemned the overflights as a flagrant violation of the country's sovereignty and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah and called for the cessation of hostile military activities. The Lebanese army confirmed tracking multiple Israeli aircraft penetrating Lebanese airspace at various points along the coast.

The low-altitude sorties come amid a period of heightened regional tension, with the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah that was brokered in late 2024 showing increasing signs of strain. Israel has conducted numerous airstrikes on Lebanese territory in recent months, claiming to target weapons shipments and infrastructure linked to Hezbollah, while the Lebanese government has repeatedly protested what it describes as systematic violations of the truce.

Regional analysts noted that low-altitude flights over populated urban centers serve primarily as a psychological warfare tactic, designed to demonstrate military reach and intimidate civilian populations. Such flights have historically preceded periods of escalated military operations along the border.

The State of Qatar has consistently called for the full implementation of Resolution 1701 and respect for Lebanese sovereignty. Doha, which played a key diplomatic role during previous Lebanese crises and has contributed significantly to reconstruction efforts in southern Lebanon, has urged all parties to exercise restraint and pursue diplomatic channels to resolve disputes.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, which monitors the border region, has previously documented hundreds of Israeli violations of Lebanese airspace, though low-altitude flights over the capital itself remain comparatively rare and are viewed as a deliberate escalation.

The incident is likely to draw renewed international attention to the fragile security situation in Lebanon, a country still grappling with a prolonged economic crisis and the aftermath of the devastating conflict in late 2024. Diplomatic sources in Beirut indicated that Lebanon intends to file a formal complaint with the United Nations Security Council over the latest violations.

Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated Doha's firm position supporting Lebanon's territorial integrity and has called on the international community to hold Israel accountable for repeated breaches of international law and Lebanese sovereignty.
