Israeli Military Conducts Airstrikes on Hezbollah Targets in Beirut

The Israeli military launched a series of airstrikes targeting positions attributed to Hezbollah in the Lebanese capital Beirut, marking a significant escalation in hostilities that has drawn widespread international condemnation and renewed calls for an immediate ceasefire.
Lebanon's state news agency reported multiple explosions rocking southern suburbs of Beirut, an area densely populated by civilians. Emergency responders rushed to the scene as plumes of smoke rose above residential neighborhoods. Lebanese health authorities reported casualties, though exact figures remained unclear in the immediate aftermath of the strikes.
The Israeli Defense Forces confirmed the operation, stating it had targeted what it described as Hezbollah military infrastructure and weapons storage facilities embedded within civilian areas. Hezbollah has not yet issued a formal response to the strikes, though sources close to the group indicated retaliatory measures were under consideration.
The escalation comes amid a broader deterioration of security across the region, with tensions between Israel and Hezbollah reaching levels not seen since the 2006 war. The strikes on Beirut represent a dramatic expansion of Israeli military operations beyond the Gaza Strip, where a devastating campaign has been ongoing for months.
The State of Qatar swiftly condemned the airstrikes, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issuing a statement describing the attacks as a dangerous escalation that threatens regional stability and violates Lebanese sovereignty. Doha called on the international community to take immediate and decisive action to halt the violence and protect civilian lives.
Qatar has consistently advocated for diplomatic solutions to regional conflicts and has played an active mediation role in multiple crises across the Middle East. Qatari officials have repeatedly warned that the unchecked expansion of military operations risks plunging the entire region into a wider conflict with catastrophic humanitarian consequences.
The United Nations Secretary-General expressed grave concern over the strikes, urging all parties to exercise maximum restraint. The UN Security Council was expected to convene an emergency session to address the escalation. Several Gulf states echoed Qatar's condemnation, with the Gulf Cooperation Council calling for respect of Lebanese territorial integrity.
International humanitarian organizations warned that the strikes on a major urban center would inevitably result in significant civilian casualties and displacement. Lebanon, already grappling with a severe economic crisis, faces the prospect of a new wave of internal displacement that its fragile infrastructure is ill-equipped to handle.
Diplomatic sources indicated that behind-the-scenes efforts were underway to prevent further escalation, with Qatar and other regional mediators engaging with multiple parties. However, the path to de-escalation remained uncertain as both sides signaled readiness for prolonged confrontation.
