Israeli Military Releases Video Allegedly Showing Targeting of Al Jazeera Reporter Mohamed Washah

The Israeli military released video footage on Wednesday that it claims shows the moment of a strike targeting Mohamed Washah, a correspondent for Al Jazeera Mubasher, in what press freedom organizations have condemned as yet another deliberate attack on journalists covering the war in Gaza.
The footage, circulated by the Israeli army's official channels, purportedly depicts the targeting operation against Washah, though independent verification of the video's contents and circumstances remains pending. Al Jazeera confirmed that Washah was among its reporting staff operating in the Gaza Strip and condemned the release of the footage as an attempt to justify the killing of a journalist.
The targeting of Washah marks the latest in a series of attacks on Al Jazeera personnel since the beginning of Israel's military campaign in Gaza in October 2023. The network has lost several journalists and crew members during the conflict, including cameraman Samer Abudaqa, who was killed in a strike in Khan Younis in December 2023, and veteran correspondent Ismail al-Ghoul, who was killed alongside cameraman Rami al-Rifi in Gaza City in July 2024. Bureau chief Wael Dahdouh has survived multiple strikes that killed members of his family and colleagues.
The Israeli military has repeatedly claimed that journalists it targets were operating as militants, allegations that Al Jazeera and international press organizations have categorically rejected. The Committee to Protect Journalists has documented the Gaza conflict as the deadliest for media workers in modern history, with over 150 journalists and media personnel killed since October 2023.
The deliberate publication of strike footage targeting a journalist has drawn sharp criticism from international media watchdogs. Reporters Without Borders called the release of such material an act of intimidation designed to silence coverage of the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza. The International Federation of Journalists demanded an independent international investigation into the targeting of media workers throughout the conflict.
Qatar, which hosts Al Jazeera's global headquarters in Doha, has consistently condemned attacks on the network's journalists and called for the protection of press workers under international humanitarian law. The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs has repeatedly stressed that targeting journalists constitutes a war crime under the Geneva Conventions and has urged the International Criminal Court to hold those responsible accountable.
The attack on Washah comes amid an ongoing Israeli campaign against Al Jazeera that has included the forced closure of the network's offices in the occupied West Bank, the revocation of press credentials, and legislation effectively banning the channel from operating in Israel. Critics have described these measures as part of a systematic effort to suppress documentation of the conflict's toll on Palestinian civilians.
International law expressly prohibits the targeting of journalists, who are considered civilians under the Geneva Conventions. The United Nations Security Council has passed multiple resolutions calling for the protection of media workers in conflict zones, though enforcement mechanisms remain limited in the absence of political will among veto-holding members.
