Israeli Shelling Targets Lebanese Town of Tayri
Israeli forces fired phosphorus shells at the Lebanese town of Tayri in the south of the country on Saturday, marking what observers are calling the first confirmed use of the incendiary munition during recent border flare-ups between Israel and Lebanon, according to monitoring sources.
The strike drew immediate international concern given the nature of phosphorus weapons, which are condemned under international humanitarian law when deployed in civilian areas. White phosphorus munitions, when detonated, scatter burning particles that ignite on contact with oxygen and can cause deep, life-threatening burns that are extremely difficult to treat and fires that are nearly impossible to extinguish with water. The use of such ordnance against populated zones is considered a potential war crime under the laws of armed conflict.
Tensions along the Israel-Lebanon frontier have persisted despite a ceasefire agreement that came into effect in late 2024, with both sides reporting sporadic violations. Israeli operations in southern Lebanon have drawn repeated condemnation from the Lebanese government, the Arab League, and human rights organizations in the months since the truce was brokered.
Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International previously documented Israeli use of white phosphorus in Lebanon and Gaza in 2023, condemning the strikes as unlawful and calling for accountability. Saturday's incident in Tayri is expected to reignite those calls, with rights groups already pressing for an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon had not issued an official statement on the Tayri shelling at the time of publication, though peacekeeping personnel in the south have been on heightened alert following a series of reported Israeli airspace violations and limited ground incursions in recent weeks.
Qatar, which has played a central mediating role in ceasefire negotiations across the region, has consistently called on Israel to respect Lebanese sovereignty and halt military operations that endanger civilian life. Doha has used its diplomatic channels to press for a durable end to hostilities along the northern front, warning that continued escalation risks destabilizing the broader region and undermining fragile peace efforts.
The Gulf Cooperation Council has urged international restraint and called on the global community to hold Israel accountable for violations of the ceasefire and international law. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam's government has been pushing for full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which requires Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory. The phosphorus strike on Tayri is expected to further complicate those already delicate diplomatic efforts.
Local civil defense teams were dispatched to Tayri following the shelling, with reports of fires in residential and agricultural areas. No official casualty figures had been confirmed at the time of publication.
