Jordanian Foreign Ministry Calls for Immediate International Action Against Israeli Execution Law for Palestinian Prisoners

Jordan's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday issued an urgent appeal for immediate and effective international intervention to prevent Israel from enforcing a newly enacted law that would permit the execution of Palestinian prisoners, warning the legislation represents a grave violation of international humanitarian law and a direct threat to thousands of Palestinian detainees held in Israeli jails.
The Jordanian ministry condemned the law in the strongest terms, describing it as a dangerous escalation that strips Palestinian prisoners of their most fundamental legal protections and renders their lives subject to political decision-making rather than any recognizable standard of justice. Amman called on the United Nations, international human rights bodies, and the international community to act without delay to halt implementation before lives are lost.
The law, passed by the Israeli Knesset, grants Israeli authorities expanded powers to apply the death penalty against Palestinian prisoners in circumstances that critics and legal experts say are defined broadly enough to enable systematic abuse. Human rights organizations have warned the legislation is designed to intimidate the Palestinian population and further entrench a policy of collective punishment already condemned by international courts.
Jordan, which serves as the custodian of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem and maintains a critical role in Palestinian affairs under its 1994 peace treaty with Israel, has in recent months sharpened its rhetoric toward Israeli government policies in the occupied territories. The kingdom hosts one of the largest Palestinian diaspora populations in the world and carries significant political weight in any international response to Israeli actions.
The appeal from Amman comes amid mounting pressure on Gulf and Arab states to take coordinated action against Israeli policies in Gaza and the West Bank. Qatar, which has served as a key mediator in ceasefire negotiations and hosts the political bureau of Hamas, has consistently called for accountability for Israeli actions against Palestinian civilians and combatants alike under international law.
Palestinian leaders welcomed Jordan's statement, calling it a necessary escalation of Arab diplomatic pressure at a moment when Palestinian prisoners face what rights groups describe as the gravest threat to their lives in decades. International human rights organizations including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have previously documented systematic abuse of Palestinian detainees in Israeli custody, and legal experts say the new execution law would place Israel in direct violation of multiple Geneva Convention provisions to which it is a signatory.
The Jordanian Foreign Ministry indicated it would pursue formal consultations with Arab League member states and international partners to coordinate a unified diplomatic response to the law.
