Ministry of Interior Warns Against Stopping Vehicles in Tunnels During Unstable Weather

Qatar's Ministry of Interior on Wednesday issued a public advisory warning motorists against stopping their vehicles inside tunnels during periods of unstable weather, citing serious safety risks that could lead to accidents and traffic disruptions across the country's road network.

The ministry emphasized that tunnels, which serve as critical arteries in Qatar's modern transportation infrastructure, become particularly hazardous when drivers halt their vehicles inside them during heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, or reduced visibility conditions. Such behavior, the ministry noted, not only endangers the stopped vehicle's occupants but also poses significant risks to other motorists who may be unable to react in time within the confined space.

In its statement, the Ministry of Interior urged all road users to strictly follow safety guidelines issued by authorities during adverse weather events. These guidelines include maintaining safe following distances, reducing speed in poor conditions, and ensuring vehicles are in proper working order before venturing onto roads during weather warnings. The ministry stressed that drivers who experience vehicle trouble inside a tunnel should activate hazard lights immediately and attempt to move the vehicle to the nearest safe exit point rather than remaining stationary.

The advisory comes as Qatar enters a period of seasonal weather instability, with the Qatar Meteorology Department having issued several warnings in recent weeks about thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds affecting various parts of the country. Flash flooding has historically posed challenges to road infrastructure in the Gulf region, and Qatar has invested heavily in drainage systems and tunnel engineering to mitigate such risks.

Qatar's extensive tunnel network, developed as part of the country's massive infrastructure modernization program, includes several major underground passages in Doha and its surrounding areas. These tunnels were designed with advanced ventilation, lighting, and emergency response systems, but authorities have consistently emphasized that driver behavior remains the most critical factor in preventing accidents.

The Ministry of Interior also called on the public to cooperate with traffic police and civil defense personnel during weather emergencies, noting that obstruction of rescue and emergency operations carries legal penalties under Qatari traffic law. Authorities have increased patrols and deployed additional emergency response units along major routes and tunnel corridors during the current weather advisory period.

Officials reiterated that real-time traffic updates and weather advisories are available through the Ministry of Interior's official social media channels and the Metrash application, urging residents and citizens alike to stay informed and exercise caution on the roads until conditions stabilize.
