Mourners Gather in Tehran for Funeral of Street Sweeper Killed in Strikes

Thousands of mourners filled the streets of central Tehran on Tuesday to bid farewell to Hassan Khairan, a municipal street sweeper whose death in recent military strikes has become a symbol of the devastating civilian toll of the escalating US-Israeli campaign against Iran.
Khairan, 47, was killed last week when airstrikes struck a residential district in southern Tehran where he had been completing his early morning shift. Colleagues said he had worked for the Tehran municipality for more than two decades, supporting a family of six on a modest salary. His funeral procession, which stretched for several kilometres through the capital, drew citizens from all walks of life who chanted slogans condemning the ongoing bombardment.
The outpouring of grief underscored the growing anguish among ordinary Iranians as the conflict enters its most destructive phase. According to Iranian health authorities, more than 1,500 civilians have been killed since the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes in February, with the death toll including more than 200 children. Hospitals across multiple provinces have reported being overwhelmed, and entire neighbourhoods in Tehran, Isfahan, and Shiraz have been reduced to rubble.
Khairan's story resonated widely on social media, where images of his worn work uniform laid atop his coffin were shared millions of times. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian referenced the street sweeper's death during an address to the nation, calling it evidence that the strikes were targeting not military infrastructure but the fabric of civilian life.
The escalation has drawn sharp condemnation from across the Gulf region. Qatar's Foreign Ministry reiterated its call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, warning that the continued bombardment of civilian areas risks plunging the entire Middle East into a broader conflagration. Doha has positioned itself as a mediating force since the outbreak of hostilities, with Qatari diplomatic channels remaining among the few open lines of communication between the warring parties.
Humanitarian organisations operating in Iran have echoed these concerns. The International Committee of the Red Cross said access to affected areas remains severely restricted, hampering efforts to deliver medical supplies and emergency aid. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights issued a statement urging all parties to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law and to protect civilian infrastructure.
Regional analysts say the funeral's scale reflects a deepening sense among the Iranian public that the war has moved beyond strategic targets to inflict collective punishment. The killing of workers, children, and families in their homes has galvanised public opinion not only in Iran but across the Muslim world, where calls for diplomatic intervention have intensified.
As diplomatic efforts led by Qatar and other Gulf states continue behind closed doors, the image of a street sweeper's coffin carried through the streets of Tehran serves as a stark reminder that the heaviest price of this conflict is being paid by those who had no part in starting it.
