Pakistani Prime Minister Begins Tour of Saudi Arabia Qatar Turkey

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif departed Islamabad on Tuesday for a diplomatic tour of three key Muslim-majority nations, with scheduled stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey, in a visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and addressing pressing regional and economic concerns.
The tour, which comes amid heightened tensions between Pakistan and India following the recent deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir, underscores Islamabad's effort to rally diplomatic support from its closest allies in the Muslim world. Pakistani officials said the prime minister would hold meetings with the leadership of all three countries to discuss bilateral cooperation, regional security, and economic partnerships.
Saudi Arabia is expected to be the first stop on Sharif's itinerary, where he is likely to meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The two nations have deepened their economic relationship in recent years, with Riyadh extending financial lifelines to Islamabad during repeated balance-of-payments crises. Discussions are expected to center on expanding Saudi investment in Pakistan and cooperation on energy projects.
The Qatar leg of the visit carries particular significance as Doha and Islamabad continue to build on a relationship that has grown substantially over the past decade. Qatar is one of the largest employers of Pakistani workers in the Gulf, with hundreds of thousands of Pakistani nationals contributing to the country's construction, services, and energy sectors. Trade between the two nations has expanded steadily, and Doha has previously signaled interest in investing in Pakistan's liquefied natural gas infrastructure and other strategic sectors. The visit is also expected to touch on Qatar's well-established role as a regional mediator, with Sharif likely seeking Doha's counsel on the current standoff with India and broader South Asian security dynamics.
In Ankara, Sharif is expected to meet President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a leader who has consistently voiced support for Pakistan on the Kashmir issue. Turkey and Pakistan enjoy close defense cooperation, and the two sides are expected to discuss expanding trade volumes, which both governments have acknowledged fall short of their potential.
The timing of the tour is notable. Pakistan finds itself navigating a tense diplomatic environment following India's suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and military mobilization along the border. By engaging three influential capitals in quick succession, Sharif appears to be building a coalition of support while also pursuing economic relief for a country still grappling with high inflation and an ongoing International Monetary Fund program.
Analysts say the trip reflects Pakistan's traditional diplomatic playbook of leveraging its relationships with Gulf and Turkish allies during moments of regional pressure, while also seeking the investment and energy partnerships that are critical to its economic recovery.
