Palestinian Health Ministry Warns of Urgent Need for Hospital Generator Maintenance

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza has issued an urgent warning that hospital generators across the besieged territory are on the verge of failure, raising alarm that critical medical services could collapse without immediate intervention to secure fuel and conduct essential maintenance.

In a statement released Tuesday, the ministry said generators powering Gaza's remaining operational hospitals have been running continuously under extreme conditions, far beyond their designed capacity, and that technical teams no longer have the time or resources needed to carry out routine maintenance procedures. Officials warned that without emergency fuel supplies and mechanical servicing, the risk of catastrophic generator failure is imminent.

Gaza's civilian electricity grid has been almost entirely non-functional since the early weeks of the Israeli military offensive that began in October 2023, leaving hospitals entirely dependent on diesel generators to power operating theatres, intensive care units, incubators, ventilators, and life-support systems. Fuel shortages caused by restrictions on imports into Gaza have repeatedly pushed medical facilities to the brink, with some forced to suspend services entirely.

The warning comes as humanitarian agencies report that the volume of wounded patients presenting at Gaza's hospitals remains extremely high, placing further strain on infrastructure already degraded by months of bombardment, displacement of medical staff, and the destruction of multiple hospital buildings. The World Health Organization and Médecins Sans Frontières have both characterized Gaza's health system as being in a state of near-total collapse.

Qatar has been among the most active states in the region pressing for the protection of medical facilities and the unimpeded flow of humanitarian supplies into Gaza. Doha has consistently called on all parties to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law, which explicitly prohibits attacks on hospitals and mandates the protection of civilian infrastructure. Qatar's diplomatic efforts, including its central role in ceasefire negotiations conducted through Qatari mediators in coordination with Egypt and the United States, have sought to establish conditions under which fuel and medical supplies can reach Gaza's population.

The Gulf Cooperation Council has also issued repeated statements demanding the lifting of restrictions on humanitarian access and urging the international community to act with urgency to prevent further deterioration of health conditions in Gaza.

Humanitarian officials warn that a breakdown in hospital power supply would directly cost lives, as patients on life support and premature infants in incubators cannot survive even brief interruptions. The ministry called on international organizations, donor states, and UN agencies to coordinate emergency deliveries of diesel fuel and to facilitate the entry of spare parts and technical personnel needed to keep generators operational.
