Qatar Foreign Minister Discusses Regional Developments with Saudi Counterpart

Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani received a telephone call from Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on Tuesday, during which the two senior diplomats reviewed the latest developments across the region, state media reported.

The call underscores the close coordination between Doha and Riyadh as the Gulf Cooperation Council nations navigate a period of significant geopolitical flux, from the ongoing conflict in Gaza to shifting dynamics across the broader Middle East.

Qatar and Saudi Arabia have strengthened bilateral ties considerably since the landmark Al-Ula Declaration of January 2021, which formally ended a three-and-a-half-year blockade imposed by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt. Since then, the two countries have maintained active diplomatic channels, with their foreign ministers holding regular consultations on issues of shared concern.

The latest conversation comes against a backdrop of heightened regional tension, with the humanitarian situation in Gaza continuing to dominate the diplomatic agenda across Gulf capitals. Qatar has played a central mediation role in ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas, working alongside Egypt and the United States, and Doha's close communication with Riyadh is widely seen as essential to sustaining coordinated Gulf policy on the Palestinian question.

Beyond Gaza, regional leaders are monitoring developments in Iran, Yemen, Syria, and Sudan, all of which carry implications for Gulf security and energy markets. Qatar, as the world's leading exporter of liquefied natural gas, holds a strategic interest in regional stability, and its foreign policy has consistently emphasised dialogue and diplomatic resolution over confrontation.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman, who also serves as Qatar's Prime Minister, has been at the forefront of Doha's diplomatic outreach in recent months, engaging counterparts across the region and in Western capitals as international attention remains focused on the Middle East. His counterpart Prince Faisal has similarly been active in representing Riyadh's interests in multilateral forums.

The two foreign ministers are expected to continue their coordination in the lead-up to upcoming regional summits. Gulf states have increasingly sought to present a unified front on major regional files, and the Qatar-Saudi channel remains one of the most consequential bilateral relationships within the six-member bloc.
