Qatar and Saudi Arabia Back US-Iran Ceasefire Deal in Doha Talks April 2026

Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani met Monday with his Saudi Arabian counterpart to discuss the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, with both Gulf states expressing firm support for consolidating the truce and preventing a return to hostilities.
The Qatari Foreign Ministry confirmed that the two senior officials reviewed mechanisms to strengthen the ceasefire agreement and explored ways to build on the diplomatic opening it has created across the region. Qatar, which has long served as a trusted backchannel between Washington and Tehran, has been deeply embedded in the diplomacy surrounding the cessation of hostilities.
The talks underscore the Gulf Cooperation Council's collective interest in seeing a durable de-escalation between the United States and Iran, whose confrontation had rattled energy markets and threatened to draw the wider region into open conflict. Both Qatar and Saudi Arabia — the bloc's two most prominent energy exporters — carry enormous stakes in regional stability and in ensuring that fragile ceasefires do not unravel.
Qatar has played a pivotal mediating role in recent months, maintaining open and active lines of communication with both the American and Iranian governments. Doha hosted several rounds of indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran in the lead-up to the ceasefire announcement, with Qatari diplomats shuttling between delegations to bridge gaps on core issues including Iran's nuclear program and the scope of American sanctions.
Saudi Arabia, which restored diplomatic ties with Iran in 2023 through Chinese mediation, has also emerged as a key regional stakeholder pressing for de-escalation. The Riyadh-Tehran rapprochement had been tested severely by the latest round of US-Iran tensions, and Riyadh has been careful to avoid being drawn into direct confrontation.
The joint Qatar-Saudi consultations signal a coordinated Gulf approach to cementing the ceasefire and channeling it toward broader diplomatic engagement. Qatar's Foreign Minister stressed the importance of transforming the truce into a foundation for lasting regional stability, warning that the absence of a structured diplomatic framework risks allowing tensions to resurface. Doha has consistently championed dialogue over military confrontation as the only viable path to sustainable peace in the Gulf.
The meeting is expected to be followed by further consultations with other GCC member states as the bloc moves to consolidate a unified position in support of the ongoing diplomatic process.
