Qatar Sends 100 Tons of Humanitarian and Medical Aid to Lebanon via Beirut Airport
DOHA — Qatar dispatched 100 tons of humanitarian and medical aid to Lebanon on Saturday, with the cargo arriving at Beirut's Rafic Hariri International Airport in a demonstration of the Gulf state's sustained commitment to supporting Lebanon amid the country's protracted economic and humanitarian crisis.
The aid shipment, organized under the directives of Qatar's leadership, includes medical supplies, food staples, and essential relief materials intended to support Lebanese civilians grappling with one of the worst economic collapses in modern history. The delivery underscores Qatar's long-standing policy of humanitarian engagement across the Arab world, even as Lebanon navigates political uncertainty and the lingering consequences of the devastating 2020 Beirut port explosion.
Lebanon has been mired in a severe financial crisis since 2019, with its currency losing more than 98 percent of its value and a significant portion of its population falling below the poverty line. The healthcare sector has been particularly hard hit, with hospitals struggling to procure basic medicines and equipment amid chronic foreign currency shortages. United Nations estimates suggest that roughly 80 percent of Lebanese now live in poverty, making external humanitarian support a critical lifeline for the country's most vulnerable communities.
Qatar has been among the most consistent Arab donors to Lebanon, having previously provided hundreds of millions of dollars in direct support, aid shipments, and reconstruction assistance following the August 2020 explosion that killed more than 200 people and devastated large swaths of Beirut. Doha has also hosted diplomatic dialogue aimed at resolving Lebanon's political deadlock and facilitating the election of a president, a position that remained vacant for an extended period as rival factions failed to reach consensus.
The latest shipment arrives as Lebanon works to stabilize its political landscape following the election of President Joseph Aoun in January 2025 and the formation of a government led by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. International donors, including Gulf states, have signaled renewed interest in supporting Lebanon's recovery provided the new government implements long-overdue economic reforms.
Qatar's foreign policy has consistently prioritized humanitarian diplomacy as a tool of regional engagement, with Doha channeling significant resources to conflict-affected and economically distressed populations across the Arab world. The country has played a central role in mediating ceasefires and delivering aid in Gaza, Sudan, and Syria, establishing itself as one of the region's most active humanitarian actors. Qatari officials have repeatedly emphasized that the kingdom views humanitarian assistance as an expression of Arab solidarity and shared responsibility — values enshrined in the country's national vision and its approach to foreign affairs.
