Severe Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain Expected Tonight Along Qatar's Coast and Sea

Qatar's Department of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning on Wednesday evening, alerting residents and maritime operators to expect intense thunderstorms and heavy rainfall along the country's coastline and offshore waters through the overnight hours.

The advisory, released through official channels, cautioned that visibility could drop significantly in coastal areas and at sea as storm cells move across the region. Authorities urged drivers, fishermen, and those engaged in maritime activities to exercise heightened caution and avoid unnecessary travel during the peak of the weather event.

Forecasters indicated that the storm system, driven by an upper-level trough interacting with warm, moisture-laden air over the Arabian Gulf, is expected to produce substantial rainfall accumulations in a short period. Such conditions carry the risk of localized flooding in low-lying areas, particularly along Doha's Corniche and in parts of Al Wakrah and Al Khor where drainage infrastructure can be overwhelmed by sudden downpours.

The warning follows a pattern of increasingly volatile spring weather across the Gulf region, where rising sea surface temperatures have contributed to more frequent and intense convective storms during the March-April transition period. Climate researchers at Qatar University have noted that the frequency of severe weather events in the Gulf has increased measurably over the past decade, a trend consistent with broader regional climate projections.

Qatar's National Command Centre, which coordinates emergency response across government agencies, confirmed that all relevant departments have been placed on standby. The Interior Ministry's traffic department advised motorists to reduce speed and maintain safe following distances, while the General Authority of Customs and Ports issued notices to vessels operating in Qatari territorial waters.
