Spanish Prime Minister Supports Justice for Mass Atrocities in Gaza, Hopes to Prevent Repetition in Lebanon

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Monday called for accountability for those responsible for mass atrocities in Gaza, declaring that his government stands firmly behind international justice and rejects impunity for war crimes. Speaking publicly, Sánchez expressed hope that the scale of destruction witnessed in Gaza would not be replicated in Lebanon, adding urgency to international calls for a lasting ceasefire across the region.
"We support justice and no impunity for those committing mass atrocities as seen in Gaza. We hope it is not repeated in Lebanon," Sánchez said, in remarks that underscored Spain's increasingly vocal stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the broader humanitarian crisis engulfing the Middle East.
Spain has emerged as one of the most outspoken European governments on the Gaza war, having formally recognised Palestinian statehood in May 2024 alongside Norway and Ireland. Madrid has repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire and has supported moves to hold Israel accountable before international legal bodies, including the International Court of Justice.
Sánchez's latest remarks come as the death toll in Gaza has surpassed 51,000 since October 2023, according to Palestinian health authorities, with vast swathes of the territory reduced to rubble following sustained Israeli military operations. International aid agencies have warned of famine conditions across Gaza, with humanitarian access remaining severely restricted.
The Spanish prime minister's comments carry particular resonance in the Gulf, where Qatar has played a central diplomatic role in ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas. Doha has consistently supported accountability mechanisms and called on the international community to uphold international humanitarian law. Qatar's foreign ministry has previously welcomed statements by European governments that align with the position of the broader Arab world — that justice and reconstruction in Gaza cannot be separated.
Lebanon, meanwhile, continues to recover from a devastating Israeli military campaign launched in late 2024 that killed thousands and displaced over a million people. A fragile ceasefire brokered in part through US diplomacy has held, but humanitarian conditions in the country's south remain dire.
European calls for accountability have grown louder in recent months, with Spain leading a bloc of nations pushing for stricter enforcement of international law and a reassessment of arms exports to Israel. The European Union itself remains divided on the issue, with some member states resisting more punitive measures against Tel Aviv.
