Trump made the remarks on his Truth Social platform, escalating tensions with the Catholic Church just days after the election of Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born pontiff in the history of the Church. The president alleged that the Catholic Church had selected the new pope specifically to manage relations with his administration, a claim that Vatican observers dismissed as unfounded and politically motivated.

"They chose him to deal with me, but he's going to have to do a lot better," Trump wrote, according to posts circulating widely on social media. "Very weak on crime, very weak on foreign policy. Not what the Catholic people deserve."

The White House did not issue a formal statement clarifying or walking back Trump's comments. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, asked about the remarks at Monday's briefing, said the president "speaks for himself" and declined to elaborate.

Pope Leo XIV has not yet responded directly to Trump's attack. Since his election, the pontiff has emphasized themes of peace, solidarity with the poor, and dialogue across civilizational and religious lines — positions that have repeatedly put him at odds with the broad contours of the Trump administration's domestic and foreign agenda.
