Trump Open to Diplomatic Solution with Iran Despite Talks Collapse: White House Sources to WSJ

The White House has signaled that President Donald Trump remains open to a diplomatic resolution with Iran even as direct negotiations between the two countries have stalled, according to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal, raising cautious hopes across the Gulf region that a new confrontation may yet be averted.

Senior administration officials told the Journal that Trump has not abandoned the prospect of a deal with Tehran, despite the breakdown of preliminary talks that had been quietly facilitated in recent weeks. The sources indicated that the president views diplomacy as preferable to military escalation, though Washington has made clear that any agreement must include ironclad restrictions on Iran's nuclear program.

The disclosure comes at a particularly sensitive moment in the Middle East, where Gulf states including Qatar have consistently advocated for de-escalation between Washington and Tehran. Qatar, which maintains diplomatic relations with Iran while hosting the largest American military base in the region at Al Udeid, has long served as a potential back-channel between the two adversaries.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian have both recently issued statements casting doubt on the viability of negotiations, with Tehran accusing Washington of bad faith and contradictory demands. Iranian officials have insisted that any talks must begin from a position of mutual respect and lead to the lifting of sweeping sanctions that have crippled the country's economy.

Trump, who in his first term unilaterally withdrew from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and reimposed devastating sanctions on Iran, returned to office earlier this year promising a tougher approach while simultaneously leaving the door open to what he described as a better deal. The apparent contradiction has fueled uncertainty in regional capitals trying to gauge Washington's true intentions.

Gulf analysts warn that prolonged ambiguity risks empowering hardliners on both sides. Qatar's foreign policy establishment has repeatedly called for a structured diplomatic framework that addresses both Iran's nuclear ambitions and the legitimate security concerns of Gulf Cooperation Council member states.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly a fifth of the world's oil supply passes, remains the most acute pressure point. Any military miscalculation between the United States and Iran would have immediate consequences for energy markets and the economies of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, all of which depend heavily on unimpeded oil and gas exports.

White House officials declined to provide a timeline for any resumed talks, and it remained unclear whether Iran would re-engage following the recent collapse. The Journal reported that internal deliberations within the administration are ongoing, with some officials pushing for a broader regional security framework rather than a bilateral nuclear-only agreement.
