US President Donald Trump on Friday claimed that a strike on Tehran had killed senior Iranian military commanders, in what would mark one of the most significant escalations between Washington and Tehran in decades.

Trump made the announcement without providing specific details about which commanders were targeted or the nature of the operation, leaving intelligence agencies and allied governments scrambling to verify the claim. Iranian state media had not confirmed or denied the report at the time of publication.

If confirmed, the strike would represent a dramatic escalation in the long-standing confrontation between the United States and Iran, coming amid heightened tensions over Tehran's nuclear programme and its regional proxy network. The last comparable incident — the assassination of IRGC Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani in January 2020 — triggered a near-war crisis and Iranian ballistic missile strikes on US bases in Iraq.

Gulf Cooperation Council member states have historically urged diplomatic resolution to US-Iran disputes, mindful that any full-scale military conflict would devastate regional economies and displace millions.
