Trump Says Controlling Strait of Hormuz Will Bring Enormous Wealth

President Donald Trump declared on Thursday that seizing control of the Strait of Hormuz would generate enormous wealth for the United States, in remarks that sent immediate ripples through Gulf energy markets and alarmed regional governments whose economies depend on the narrow waterway's unobstructed passage.

Trump made the comments in a post on Truth Social and in subsequent remarks to reporters, framing dominance over the strait — through which roughly 20 percent of the world's traded oil flows daily — as a financial opportunity for Washington. He did not specify what form American control would take or how it would be enforced, but the statement marked an unusually direct assertion of territorial ambition over one of the world's most strategically sensitive chokepoints.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, serving as the sole maritime exit for crude oil and liquefied natural gas exports from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Iraq, and Qatar. For Doha in particular, the strait is existential: Qatar, the world's largest LNG exporter, ships virtually all of its liquefied natural gas cargoes through Hormuz to markets in Europe and Asia.

Qatari officials had not issued a formal response as of Thursday evening, but analysts in Doha noted that any disruption to, or foreign imposition of control over, the strait would constitute an unprecedented challenge to Gulf sovereignty and global energy security. The Gulf Cooperation Council has historically resisted any external power projecting unilateral authority over shared maritime routes.

Iran, whose coastline forms the northern shore of the strait at its narrowest point — roughly 33 kilometres wide — has repeatedly threatened to close the passage in past confrontations with Washington and has maintained a significant naval and missile presence in the region. Tehran's foreign ministry called Trump's remarks provocative and said any attempt to seize the waterway would be met with a decisive response.

Energy analysts warned that even the perception of instability in Hormuz can trigger significant price volatility. Brent crude futures rose more than two percent in early Asian trading following Trump's remarks before paring gains as markets assessed the likelihood of concrete action.

The statement fits a broader pattern of Trump's second-term foreign policy, in which the president has made expansionist or acquisitive claims regarding Panama, Greenland, and Gaza, often without accompanying policy detail. Whether the Hormuz declaration represents a concrete strategic direction or rhetorical positioning ahead of renewed Iran nuclear talks remains unclear, though it introduces fresh uncertainty into a region that had been cautiously watching Washington's posture toward Tehran.
