Two Israeli Paratroopers Injured in Attack in Southern Lebanon, Army Radio Reports

Two Israeli paratroopers were wounded in an attack in southern Lebanon early Monday, Israeli Army Radio reported, in the latest incident to test the fragile calm that has held along the Lebanese border since a ceasefire agreement took effect late last year.

The Israeli military confirmed that two soldiers from the Paratroopers Brigade sustained injuries during the attack, without providing further details on the nature of the assault, the specific location within southern Lebanon, or the group believed to be responsible. No armed faction had claimed responsibility at the time of reporting.

The incident comes amid persistent tensions along the Blue Line, the demarcation boundary separating Israeli-controlled territory from Lebanese soil. Despite a ceasefire brokered in November 2024 that halted more than a year of cross-border exchanges between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, sporadic incidents have continued to strain the accord. Under the terms of that agreement, Israeli forces were to withdraw from Lebanese territory and the Lebanese Army was to deploy to the south, with international monitors overseeing compliance.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, has maintained a presence in the region, though its operations have at times been complicated by Israeli military activity and a complex security environment on the ground. International observers have repeatedly warned that unresolved political and security issues on both sides of the border leave the ceasefire vulnerable to collapse.

Lebanon's central government, still grappling with a deep economic crisis and the gradual reconstruction of its state institutions, has limited capacity to exert full control over armed groups operating in the south.

Qatar, which has played a quiet but consequential diplomatic role in regional de-escalation efforts throughout the broader Gaza conflict and its spillover, has consistently called for restraint and dialogue as the path to durable stability in Lebanon. Doha has also served as a significant donor to Lebanese reconstruction initiatives and maintains strong diplomatic ties with Beirut.

Gulf states more broadly have expressed concern that Lebanon's fragile security situation risks destabilising the wider Levant. Any escalation carries the potential to draw in regional actors and undermine the diplomatic architecture that multiple parties have worked to construct since the November ceasefire took hold.

The Israeli military said the two injured soldiers were receiving medical treatment and that an investigation into the circumstances of the attack was underway.
