US Central Command Chief States Focus is on Iranian Regime, Not Citizens

The commander of United States Central Command has declared that American military operations are directed exclusively at the Iranian regime and its military infrastructure, not at the Iranian people, in his first public remarks since the outbreak of hostilities between Washington and Tehran.
Speaking in his first interview since the conflict began, the CENTCOM chief sought to draw a sharp distinction between the Islamic Republic's leadership and Iran's civilian population, stating that the United States holds the Iranian government responsible for any risks to its own citizens. He accused Tehran of deliberately positioning military assets in populated areas, a practice that he said endangers the very people the regime claims to protect.
The remarks come amid intensifying exchanges between American and Iranian forces across the Middle East, with Washington conducting a series of strikes against what it describes as regime-linked military targets inside Iran. The CENTCOM commander emphasized that the campaign's objective remains the degradation of Iran's ability to launch attacks against American personnel and regional partners, rather than any broader effort aimed at the Iranian state or its civilian infrastructure.
However, the assertion that military operations can be neatly separated from their impact on civilian life has drawn skepticism from humanitarian organizations and regional observers. Claims that Iranian authorities have embedded military operations within densely populated urban centers raise profound questions about the protection of non-combatants under international humanitarian law, regardless of which party bears primary responsibility for their exposure to harm.
From the Gulf perspective, the escalation carries immediate implications for regional stability and energy security. Qatar, which maintains diplomatic channels with both Washington and Tehran, has consistently advocated for dialogue and de-escalation as the path to resolving tensions in the region. Doha has long positioned itself as a mediator capable of bridging divides between adversaries, a role that takes on renewed urgency as the conflict threatens to reshape the security landscape of the entire Gulf.
Gulf states are closely monitoring the situation, mindful that any prolonged military confrontation between the United States and Iran risks drawing in neighboring countries and disrupting vital shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply passes daily.
Analysts note that the CENTCOM commander's framing of the conflict as a campaign against a regime rather than a nation echoes language used in previous American military engagements in the region, a rhetorical strategy designed to maintain international legitimacy while sustaining domestic support for operations abroad. Whether that distinction holds in practice, particularly as civilian casualties mount, remains the central question facing policymakers in Washington, Tehran, and capitals across the Gulf.
